Family Guy: Baby Not On Board
By fred | November 3, 2008
(S07E04) The season premiere was disappointing, but other than that we’re getting a really good and very funny season of Family Guy so far! Last week we had a special episode, a new Road To with Stewie and Brian involved in their latest time travel adventure. This week was more of a return to basis, to what made the show what it is and made us laughs so much all those years.
One thing I’ve never really been a fan of, for this show, is when they try to have one big story to go on over the course of the entire episode. Somehow, most of the times it falls flat and ends up disappointing. I don’t care what South Park says, I do love the jokes and references this show throws at us all the time, even - or especially - when they don’t really make sense or aren’t related at all to anything.
It’s what made this show unique and different, and also they’re usually very good at that and it’s pretty hilarious. Case in point, this week while there was an ongoing plot with Peter winning one year of free gas (don’t you dream of that, too?) and the entire family (almost) going away for a littletrip, all of what was just an excuse for the jokes, really, and those jokes were funny.
Last week already they “redid” a scene from Back To The Future, and since it worked there’s no reason they shouldn’t go at it again. And it worked, I loved it. Of course, as a kid those movies were ma favorite ones which I used to watch over & over again, so that might help, but a little skating and more importantly The Power Of Love can’t be a bad thing, right?
Side note: Remember Blue Harvest, their take on Star Wars ? At this point I think next season they should open with another special, only instead of another Star Wars they could move on to Back To The Future this time… what do you think ? would you like that ?
Anyways, back on the episode. After a few other references like Peter getting a “Ghost-inspired” massage and Chris wondering why people walked for three movies on The Lord Of The Rings and sexual harassing a customer, his dad, the free gas card came out. Of course Peter was excited about it, as in all logic it meant he could finally go to space, thanks to the recent space shuttle he bough of off NASA and used with no harms.
Then they decided to go out on a trip all together, but in a plot reminding Home Alone Stewie is left behind, all alone without anyone noticing it. Then we had lots of great jokes from both sides, from Stewie’s reaction to seeing a vagina for the first time - hilarious - to making fun Robin Williams - always appreciated - to Joe’s treating his wheelchair with all due military respect, to Peter switching cars and letting his family crash, to Stewie running and then feeling sad after his first soda, nothing but great stuff! And that’s not even half of it, because again, this was filled with all those references we - I - love so much.
From Aquaman to “Morbidly Obese Albert” to James Gandolfini’s training room to Peter’s answer to Lois inspired from Planes, Trains and Automobiles (which kinda started before they left, with the birds) to his fight with “Bob Hope” to the invasion of Iran, it was all good. It’d be easier and faster to name those I didn’t like, which for me would include the family singing in the car (a reference I didn’t get, I’ll admit, maybe if I had it wouldn’t have felt the same…?), Stewie listening to the radio, the elephant, Fozzie Bear in Arabia, and that’s about it I think. Not much really, especially considering how many of them there were this time!
PS: What’s wrong in the way Stewie welcomed everyone back home ? “Momie, Daddy, Chris, Dog, Brian!” Thank God for him because Meg is barely around and even then she’s not being picked on that much lately… We need Stewie to poop in his hat more often!
I really loved this episode, what about you ? What was your favorite moment/joke this week ? Which ones did you not like ? Are you excited about Cleveland’s spinoff ?
