Entourage: Fantasy Island [season premiere]

By fred | September 8, 2008

Entourage(S05E01) Damn it’s been a freakish long time! Seriously, when was the last time we saw an episode of Entourage before last night ? It was like almost one full year ago! Such a long time I wasn’t really sure I remembered where it was we left the boys at last season, but of course it didn’t take very long for me to remember it all. So here we are, last season they brought Medellin to Cannes, it didn’t go down as they had hoped, and now the story can continue…

But before that, what I enjoyed first was simply to see the boys back. Just to get to see Vince, E, Drama, Turtle, Ari and the others back was probably enough to get me to like this episode. And as it turned out that might be a good thing because, in all fairness, the best thing about this episode was indeed to get everyone back.

Not that this episode wasn’t good, because it was, but it was nothing special, just average. Putting aside how good it was to have the show back, this episode only served one purpose : it’s a transition from Medellin to whatever comes next for Vincent Chase and his entourage. It was required, we needed to see how everyone was dealing with the aftermath of Cannes and we needed to get everyone back in town and ready to work, so that’s what happened.

Doesn’t change the fact that on this show, things rarely evolve, especially when it comes to the boys, starting with Vince. So it was all predictable : that the movie bombed, that Vince simply ran away to a beach, spending time having fun doing nothing but eating fruits and (lots of) hot girls, just like we knew that he wouldn’t care nor want to come back to Hollywood, and just like E’s lack of fight - simply calling back Ari to tell him Vince ain’t coming back, or that Ari would be pushing him and getting them on a place so E could have Vince to change his mind, was nothing but usual stuff.

All of this was the expected behavior, because in life some things changed and other don’t, and when it comes to the boys and the way they do things, it doesn’t change much. Sure, E is trying to get his business working and at first look it seems to be going not so bad, but Medellin was a huge failure - I mean we’re months after Cannes, people are still trashing it and it’s gonna have a direct-to-DVD release! - and no matter what, Vince is still his top priority.

For now it works, especially if he allows his other client to drive his fancy car every now and then, but on the long run E will have to find a way to manage his time better, because Charlie might let him pick up the phone for Vince while in a meeting for now, but soon it will have to change, he won’t be fine with E managing him only when and if Vince doesn’t need him for something.

This episode was nothing special, it didn’t even really feel like a season premiere in fact, just like another episode of the show. Not that it’s a bad thing, because it was a good episode and despite it all I’m still having fun seeing Ari yell at everyone or see him & E trying to take care of things for Vince - though Drama’s mess over his right side, while totally in character, seemed a little old.

But now the boys are back, and they have to find the perfect project for Vince and make him a star all over again, plus E has other projects to work on as well, the show is back ready to go on for what it does best, this new season can finally start and I can’t wait to see what’s in store. Plus, that last scene with Drama & Turtle was just awesome, “Aqua man is back!!”
