Eli Stone: Pilot
By fred | February 1, 2008
(S01E01) So last night, right after the big premiere everyone will be talking about for days (I assume), was another premiere, a series premiere in fact : the one from Eli Stone. I’m personally not sure this is such a good idea, because while I don’t doubt Lost will do really good, it might not be the best lead-in one could hope for. I mean, I don’t know about you, but usually once you’ve watched a new episode of Lost, you don’t stay put for whatever comes next, you either turn the TV off and think about it, talk about it, or you just grab the remote and watch it all over again, to get a second fresh look, now that you know what will happen.
You may be wondering how come, then, I’m already reviewing this show, while no mention of Lost so far. To tell you the truth, I’ve watched this episode some days ago, and to be completely honest I’ve written those words a few days ago as well. So after a new look over what actually aired, to see how/if it’s been tweaked, and maybe make a few adjustments, that’s it. Yes, I cheated. As for Lost, I’ll need more time to think about it some more and watch it again. I just can’t wait to see it…
But enough about Lost, let’s talk about Eli Stone.
Eli Stone is a show for which I had seen promos before I got the episode, and I’ll be honest : I thought it looked… well, I wasn’t really sure what it looked like, actually, but I had a feeling it was bad. After seeing the episode, there’s one thing that hasn’t changed : I still don’t know what this show really looks like, or will look like.
No really, I don’t know what it really is, or will be about. Of course, I know it’s about Eli, a successful lawyer who used to defend the big companies and screw over the “little guy” whenever it was required, and who one day learned he’s got a brain aneurysm somewhere deep inside his brain, and because of where it is located, it cannot be operated, so he’ll have to deal with the hallucinations he’s been experiencing due to that little thing. Yes, with this thing inside his head, he’s been hearing & seeing some weird things. Like George Michael. Unless that’s a sign from above, if he’s some kind of prophet.
From then on Eli starts to question and redefines his outlook on life and his intent as a lawyer. I know what happened during this episode, but what about the next ones ? Again, I really can’t say, because I doubt every other case will be about someone he knows, or used to know, even as a child. He might be turning himself into a “prophet”, nothing less, and will have to help everyone in needs. His “visions” will probably be quite different, and I would imagine he won’t go to his new friend, Dr Chen, to trigger his memory to remember something from his own past every time… or will he ?
Meaning they must have something planned, and a more evolved role in mind for Chen, cause I wouldn’t be too happy if he was only the guy Eli comes to to get his mind filled with ideas of faith and other prophetic crap like that, I mean, where’s the fun in that ? But for now, we have no idea what things will be like. Will Eli still be a lawyer, fighting for the “little guy”, will he start his own cult, will it be somewhere in the middle ? We have no idea, all we know is what happened this week, and that if things are always going down the same way it did this time, it might be a nice little show. Especially if you loved David E. Kelley’s work in the nineties…
