Eleventh Hour: Medea [season finale]

By fred | April 3, 2009

Eleventh Hour(S01E18) For its season finale, writers decided not to offer us a typical episode, but instead shake things up a bit, putting the main characters in danger and bringing in more action than is usually found on the show. It’s not really a bad thing, especially not when well handled as was the case here, but I’m not sure it was the best thing to do to end the season.

For one, because it’s such a TV cliché to create (fake) tension/threats as the season ends that it becomes boring, but also and more importantly because it’s not really what the show is supposed to be like. Not that I mind trying out something new, but then it should be something interesting and worth while, and if I have to be honest here, I don’t think it was the case.

The episode was not bad, the whole thing, albeit predictable, was well executed, but I would like something where the science stayed at the center of the episode/case, rather than instead going on a typical manhunt as could have occurred about everywhere else. And it’s not a special implant to release drug into one’s system that will be enough to make me think this was all about science.

It was not, it was about a desperate mother trying to get her kid back, while the powerful father used his influence to send the kid away and have her marked as crazy and all drugged up. By the way, let’s mention the episode’s name. Usually they’re pretty crystal clear about what the episode will be about, and this week I don’t get it. I looked over Wikipedia to read about Medea, and from what I understand she has nothing to do with our episode.

Medea didn’t had her kid taken away from her, she didn’t fight to get them back, she actually killed two of her sons to get revenge on her lover – didn’t she? How does that relate to this episode at all? Or was the Medea of the episode the husband, ready to sacrifice his own child, and his friend (Hood) just to have it his way?

Anyways, I couldn’t say why exactly, but from the very first time we saw her, I believe her. Even Hood was thinking she was crazy and off her meds or something, I just believed her, I thought it was obvious she was telling the truth, really had the kid and the rich Mr. Perfect was of course all dirty. Maybe it’s because I watch a lot of TV, I don’t know.

Either way, it made for the whole thing quite predictable, and again while it was well done it was also not very Eleventh Hour-ish. In every other cop show out there you can find this episode, one agent in danger, another one framed, the whole deal. On that note, it was a disappointment. All in all it was still a okay episode, ending the season (much) better than it started and reinforcing the bound between our two heroes – because clearly, Felix is a convenient tool to have around from time to time, but you can’t tell me he felt like an actual part of the team.

What did everybody else think?

Good finale, but your right that there really was no science in this one. I kind of like felix by the end, good distraction when needed.
