DVR Cleaning: Worst Week, Gary Unmarried, Knight Rider, The Ex List [series premiere]
By fred | October 5, 2008
Just before we start a new week, let’s end the past one with a last look on some of the shows I hadn’t actually had time to watch/review during the week. We’ll start with new episodes of the two new comedies of CBS, Worst Week and Gary Unmarried. Last week none of them was really good, but who knows, maybe it could be heading on the right direction, or not.
Speaking of wrong direction, I then did watch another episode of Knight Rider, because I was curious to see why America seemed to prefer this show over Pushing Daisies, and I think I can see why. Not that it excuses it. Lastly I gave a quick try at CBS new Friday show, The Ex List, not expecting much, which is good because it didn’t had much to offer.
Worst Week: The Bird
(S01E02) As I feared, this show won’t live long. The first episode wasn’t all that bad I thought, and it did made me laugh a few times, but by the end of those first twenty-something minutes already you knew. You knew, because of the premise of the show that wants to put Sam always in trouble, you knew what was going to happen. Everything was already getting incredibly predictable, and it only got worse.
Because it’s not only that Sam in unlucky, or that whenever he tries to do something to impress the parents of his future wife, it somehow backfires and he gets in trouble. No, it’s also that the guy is an idiot who’s clearly asking for it. In this episode, he starts by accepting a meal emphasizing how much he’s sure he’ll love it, even though he actually hates it.
So then of course he tried to sneak food away and throw it in the toilet. Or, because that would be too simple, he stops to feed the birds. Why? Well, because then there’s a risk he gets caught, or that the bird die, which could lead to him being in more trouble and having to lie some more which will only get him in deeper trouble over & over again.
But in the end, it’s already getting really old, predictable, Sam just looks and acts like a moron, and the whole thing is pretty boring, really.
Gary Unmarried: Gary Gets Boundaries
(S01E02) This is the other new sitcom CBS tried to launch this season, and it doesn’t seem to be doing any better that Worst Week. I thought there was more potential in this show, that it could actually be funny, despite its very old structure and format. But I think I was wrong, because while there was still a couple of laughs in there, that’s really far from being enough for a half-hour whose goal is supposed to be funny.
Jay Mohr can be funny, he was perfect as Peter Dragon and was absolutely hilarious, but here everything is wrong, it’s the kind of crap that could’ve worked years ago, but I would like to think television has gotten better since then. Granted the material he is given isn’t really good, but it doesn’t help that Mohr is completely overacting everything, though he’s far from being the only one.
I’m not sure which is worse, Gary Unmarried or Worst Week, it might be the later, but that really doesn’t mean this show is any good…
