DVR Cleaning: The Simpsons, Gossip Girl

By fred | December 23, 2007

The SimpsonsSo this week was no exception for me, and besides the shows I reviewed here, I did watch a few more things on TV. Including a few more TV shows. Yes, there was still a few more new episodes on, even though not so many people seemed to be aware of that, unfortunately. This week there’s two other shows I watched, and I’d like to talk to talk about a little right here, right now.

So not really DVR Cleaning since I watched at least one of those in time, but who cares ? Those two shows are The Simpsons, and Gossip Girl. And I’ll start with the one I saw most recently, no later than yesterday in fact : The Simpsons.

The Simpsons: Eternal Moonshine Of The Simpson Mind

(S19E09) I didn’t know the title of this episode when I started watching it, because I always tried to stay away even from such things and they sometimes can be quite spoiler-filled. But had I known it, it would probably have been a great indication as how I’d feel, and do feel, towards this episode. Yes, I did enjoyed very much Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, and I did just as well with this episode.

I should mention right there - and please don’t insult me for that - but I am not a fan of this show. I like it, it’s great and most of the time really funny, but I simply haven’t watch each and every episode of it, I don’t watch it religiously, there, I said it. So I have no doubt that this episode was filled with more or less subtle and obvious references to previous episodes, classics and not, which I’m sure all of out Simpsons crazy out there would have loved.

As for me, I did enjoy this episode a lot. It wasn’t as hilarious as the show can be, but there was something else, something different, this time. A very special feeling that felt real good. Plus, it was still funny.

And I have to say, after watching this episode a question popped up in my mind : was this the very last episode of The Simpsons, ever ? Because had it been, it would have been a perfect series finale, I think.

Not just because there were allusions to all the previous seasons (yet without turning it into a clip-episode), but because of this very special feeling present throughout the entire episode. Things just felt right, somehow, and also Homer had “changed”. Like he had finally matured a little. He was still the same Homer ready to strangle his son the first occasion he has, but he also realized how much he loved and cared for his family, and by the end he decided not to drink his favorite beverage because now he wanted to enjoy some time with his family, and he wanted to really spend time with them, and remember it the next day.

Put together with the great - and controversial due to song rights - flashback on Homer’s whole life, it felt to me like this could have been a perfect conclusion for the show, a brilliant, funny and touching way to close a series.

No, I don’t want it to be over, I’m just saying that, when it comes to series finale, as far as I’m concerned this episode could have been a really good one. Brilliant.
