DVR Cleaning: My Name Is Earl, Heroes, Worst Week [series premiere]

By fred | September 28, 2008

HeroesWell it might only be the first (big) week of the new season, and not every show is back, but that doesn’t mean DVRs aren’t already getting filled. I wasn’t able to watch everything during the week, there was a few episodes left on my DVR and so here we go.

I finally took the time to watch the second episodes of both My Name Is Earl and Heroes, as well as giving a try to the other new sitcom from CBS, Worst Week. I wasn’t expecting a lot from this, and I ended up being surprised as overall things were better than I was expecting...

My Name Is Earl: Vote For This And I Promise To Do Something Crazy At The Emmys

(S04E02) First of all, quick question: apparently everyone out there seem to refer to this episode using the title above, a very fun title indeed, and I’ve even saw it used on NBC.com I think, but during the actual episode that aired, it was referred to (writing credits) as Monkeys Take A Bath — which is it?

Moving on, as I said in my review of the first episode, I didn’t really like the opener of this season. As for this second episode, I feel a bit of the same quite frankly. Let’s be honest, there was improvement : this episode was better, it was funnier and I enjoyed it more. One thing for sure, you can never go wrong with Johnny Cash, but I’m still under the impression that this wasn’t of the caliber of episodes we used to get from this show.

My Name Is EarlMaybe it has to do with the fact that, much like with the first episode, this wasn’t actually like your typical episode of Earl. The first episode had the list, this one did not, but in both case Earl was in the back and another character took the lead. This week Earl was teaming up with his father, leaving his brother on the side for the occasion, and so it wasn’t about Earl, Earl was very passive this week, he was merely watching his father doing his things.

And I also felt it was not so much in accordance to his newly found way of thinking, with his list and karma and being good, being a better person, that Earl would help his father go fight a guy like that, or then help him get laid and cheat on his wife/Earl’s mother. Sure, it made him throw-up which was hilarious, but he still went with it.

In the end, another lesson of life and, yes, some laughs, but not an episode as good and as funny as the show used to be, and should be I think. Let’s hope next week we get to see more of “bad Earl”, and see him & Randy work their way to cross things off the list.

Heroes: The Butterfly Effect

(S03E02) Another season premiere that I didn’t enjoy, but being a TVoholic I just couldn’t help myself, I had to watch this episode as well. Plus, it was there sitting on my DVR so… and this time unlike with Earl things didn’t get any better, oh no. It’s still a mess, a huge mess filled with way too much characters, as as become the rule :

Mohinder

Oh shit! Now that he’s got his power this guy is going to be even more annoying and pretentious than he already was, please don’t let this happen. When I first saw him so proud of himself and all, I really wished Maya would have her eyes go black and put an end to our suffering.

Other than that, it seems the guy is actually turning into a fly or something. Anything that ends up with him dead is fine by me, other than that and as pointed out by our reader Nikkito already, this whole plot is very familiar to The 4400 viewers (not the fly, the getting an ability in one injection), and I don’t really care to watch it again here…
