My Name is Earl: Midnight Bun
(S03E10) I’ll be honest I had forgotten that last week’s episode ended with a “To be continued”, but that pretty funny recap at the beginning of this episode was definitely a nice way to remind us of that. It was really well done, and the voice (Will Arnett’s I believe) was a perfect fit for that parody.
So Earl and his brother and to go out and get Franck back behind bars, and that whole plot turned out to be quite good. It was also good to see Earl & Randy back outside, and allowed to have them cross roads with Joy and Darnell - something that hadn’t happened in a long time, obviously.
I’m also happy to say that I actually liked the story about Joy finally delivering the baby, it was pretty good and funny. Joy isn’t always the brightest person in the room, but she can still face people so stupid even Randy could make fun of them. “Doctor Pronto to reception please, Dr. Pronto“. Great stuff.
And it’s a good thing whole thing this eventually came to a resolution because it was starting to be one of those stories dragged on for too long, kinda like Earl being locked up. At least one of them is over, and that’s a good news. I was also happy to see Catalina back to her usual self, and I loved hearing her describing to “black one” and “white one” the “games” she used to play back in her youth, it was pretty hilarious.
Now I liked this episode, but I really wish they would end the whole prison bit, it’s really been long enough for now. Besides, one thing that was always fun with the show was that as fucked up as they could be, all characters kept being believable. But the whole prison thing is all but credible, and there nothing about the warden that could actually be real.
Plus, while occasional distractions are just fine, I think I’m not alone missing Earl going back to crossing things off his list.
Samantha Who?: The Restraining Order
(S01E05) This is official, I’m done with this show, it’s simply not funny. I think the only reason it works is that it’s on ABC, and for some odd reason that’s far from enough for me.
Again, the show is based on Samantha, not only is she in all the scenes but Sam is actually the only character on that show. Really, characters do not exist and don’t have any comedy potential or interest on that show but her. And that’s a really bad thing.
It’s not new that a show is obviously focusing on one character more than others, or that one would be able to support a full episode on its own. Seinfeld was obviously a bit more about Jerry, Barney don’t need anyone to make an episode of How I Met Your Mother work. But all characters exists on those show, and they can support B-stories without problem. George, Elaine and Kramer didn’t need anyone, they could exist outside of Jerry, and it’s pretty important. One of the reason Seinfeld was so awesome is also that they had secondary character that could pretty much make an episode work and support stories on their own.
On this show, if you remove Sam you are left with nothing, at all. Her parents, both her friends, her (ex-)boyfriend, none of them exists without her, they’re only around so that Sam isn’t talking to herself. As a result, we don’t care for those, and there can pretty much only by one story going on as everything must involved Sam.
And then, how stupid could things get / can she be ?? So this week she found out she had a restraining order against her so she decided to break it, cause she wanted to tell the guy she had changed. Try not to see how retarded this is, she goes knock on his door and tell him she’s changed. He replies “that’s good, thanks for letting me know” and she buys it.
But wait, it doesn’t stop there : the guy isn’t calling the cops at that point, since she’s breaking the restraining order, to have her sent to jail. No instead he grabs his dog, goes out by the window of his apartment and escapes through the fire exit. My God how low can things get… this is just unfunny, the show is not working and it’s not going to improve if they even refuse to have any character but Sam to actually exists. I’m done with it.
