Scrubs: My Identity Crisis
(S07E04) This episode was a bit “special”, different, in ways. But I’m pretty sure this whole season is going to be and feel that way. As you know this is the last season, and it shows. Not that it’s a bad thing by the way.
Again in this episode they lowered the comedy level a little, to have stories to cover the same subject and to cross into a common conclusion. And along with that, it’s pretty clear that this episode focused way more on character development with Carla worrying about her roots or Cox having to face and accept the way he changed.
Elliot wasn’t really in that whole thing, she was actually there to force Cox to admit the truth, and that was pretty fun to witness. Because Elliot probably is the one who did grew the most over the years, so she didn’t need to face any special reveals.
And then there was JD. This season will definitely be about JD and how he has to grow and finally stop behaving as a kid and become a responsible adult. This was very nicely illustrated with the nickname challenge. It’s not like others have never used nicknames, Cox refers to JD by other girls’ names, everyone calls Beardface Beardface - but they know it’s his name, and in the end it was not just about nicknames.
Even the janitor calls Elliot Blond Doctor quite often, but JD does not care about them besides their nicknames, yet claims to be a people-person. Like Turk told him recently, he needs to grow up. Because while Turk may behave like a child as well, he’s also able to switch back to a more serious mode, being a responsible father and husband.
This season will be about JD’s growth, it seems, and probably end (if it gets to end as originally planned) when he finally will have become the man he had to become. The journey might not always be as hilarious as the show once was, but Scrubs has always be a different kind of sitcom. Episodes with such a tone aren’t new to the show, and it feels so much Scrubs that, as fan of the show, I think we can all enjoy it.
Last note: “Lavern’again”, not working so much for me. Not (just) the nickname, the whole point of having her back.
