DVR Cleaning: Criminal Reaper, My Name Is Scrubs

By fred | November 4, 2007

In fact, if I remember correctly, in the pilot Sam had “powers”, like some kind of Jedi knight he could use the Force to control, move objects, or fire, with his mind, kind of. And I do not put that into the same category as the often stupid “powers” he got later on, and that I was pleased to see not coming back every single time, like the “whatever he puts in his mouth turns to a bug” ability.

I also think a new “Hell on Earth” to deliver the vessel could be a nice change.

Anyways, this episode gets me confident that writers are on the right path to expand the possibilities of the show, to break free from the quite constraining structure they’re stuck in at the moment, and that can only be a good thing.

There were no mention of the contract deal, as previously mentioned, but I don’t mind that. Sure, having a global story and all can be nice, but as far as I’m concerned I do not see this as a requirement. No, not all shows requires to have a bit of serialization in order to work, or to be good. In fact, I often tend to find shows that aren’t “fully” serialized but include such an arc-story from time to time to usually deliver weaker episodes when this big serialized part comes into play.

For instance, and while I liked most of it, I fee like all the greatest episodes of the X-Files were independent, standalone ones. Those were the most scary, funny, interesting, captivating bunch, and quite frankly those are the ones I remember most - or would like to see again on occasion.

Not to say I hate the serialized bit, Supernatural does that, a lot, and I think it’s great. But it is not a requirement to make a great show. You can have continuity without going further than that.

Back on Reaper, I really liked this episode, and not just because of what I’ve said earlier, but also because it was, again, a great hour on entertainment, filled with lots of laughs. So much that I didn’t mind the whole thing with Andi, even though it didn’t really did anything. Sam and Sock are a great team, Sock is hilarious, and Leon was also pretty damn funny, whether as a man or a snow-globe. This show is a keeper…

Criminal Minds: About Face

(S03E06) Last week I said how I felt like writers still hadn’t adjusted to the loss of Gideon, who was a central character. This week we got introduced to a new one, and I’m not sure this changed that much. Honestly, while not as weak as the previous ones, I still felt this episode was not as good as they used to be. Plus, I may be wrong, but it seemed quite too easy to solve the case. Get there, look around, make an announcement and shoot the guy. I used to take a little more than that, no?

And regarding the new guy, maybe they did not wanted a Gideon-clone and I can appreciate that, but I’m not sure about him. Gideon was good at this job, and he knew it, yet he kept a modesty about simplicity. This guy, it wasn’t 2 minutes that I saw first saw him and I didn’t liked him that much already, because he already felt like highly pretentious.

And as it went along, he just stayed there. I get it, it’s part of the character to have him work alone, not share his thoughts, he’s coming from a different time and different methods were used. But he wasn’t introduced as a good guy, great at his job even though he’s not use to the new methodology used nowadays, but as a know-it-all jerk who doesn’t need any one else, and won’t even consult or inform them of what he’ll do - regardless of the impacts it can have.

That really has to change, because I won’t put up with that for so long, and I’m pretty sure none of the team will either.

Oh and, he comes with that special case of him that he never could close, and that he still obsessed about every day. That’s the most stupidest cliché move ever, and I really wished they would have spared us such a lame thing.
