DVR Cleaning: Aliens Who?, My Name Is Chuck, Criminal Scrubs

By fred | November 11, 2007

Criminal MindsYep, busy week end it was. I’m disappointed to see that there were no negotiation and that studio don’t even seem willing to go back and talk, every day it looks a little more like this strike is going to last, and that cannot be good. But at least we can support the writers and strike too, if we all do it things could go faster.

Anyways, this week-end I watched the latest episodes of Criminal Minds, Aliens In America, Samantha Who?, Chuck, My Name Is Earl and Scrubs. There were some very good things, others weren’t good, and some shows I’m just dropping completely.

Criminal Minds: Identity

(S03E07) Well, I am really happy to report that finally I enjoyed an episode of Criminal Minds ! For the past weeks – read ever since Gideon left – I was really disappointed in this show. Episodes weren’t as good as they used to be and the writing was weaker than the quality we’ve been used for this show. And even once the replacement was introduced, things didn’t really got much better.

Mostly, it was because of him. He was not part of the team, and didn’t even try to integrate at all – in fact, he did quite the contrary. I’m not sure why it was done that was – did he has to “prove” himself ? – but it wasn’t a good thing.

This week, however, things were completely different. To tell you the truth, I liked the new guy, Rossi, much more during that first scene before the credits than I had during the whole previous episode. He was good, I liked how he put them back where to their places, it was good and not pretentious or anything.

Then, I think the scene in the plane is a perfect illustration of the evolution since last week. Last week, he wasn’t saying a word, he wasn’t part of the conversation nor was he even trying to be, he was just writing things down in his notebook and keeping this thoughts to himself.

This week, however, he was simply a member of the team : no notebook, and an active contribution to the brainstorming discussion going on. And it all went down that way during the entire case, no one was trying to prove anything, or act on his own, once again it was a team work. At some point Reid felt the need to “confirm” to JJ what Rossi said, I’m not exactly sure why, and I’m thinking should things have been the other way around – Rossi confirming that dropping the FBI mention was a good thing – maybe it would have been worst.

But this week was finally an episode back to the level of quality we’ve been used to. Good team work and great case. Apparently writers have found their new dynamic now, and we can now relax and enjoy a great new season… well, or we wish we could, but studios still aren’t even willing to sit back and negotiate with writers, so things aren’t looking so bright unfortunately.

Aliens In America: Homecoming

(S01E06) Just a quick note about that show : I really liked the pilot, it wasn’t really daring or anything, it’s not The Sarah Silverman Program or South Park, those guys aren’t afraid of anything, and they’ll go where they want to go, say what they want to say, and we love them for that (and being so freaking hilarious).

But still, while very family friendly, I thought it was a little provocative on occasion and would keep playing with that kind of humor, because it was funny. All recent episodes showed that they were not going that way, Raja became just a regular, predictable and quite annoying character, Justin you want to punch him in the face for being so stupid, and please please shut the fuck up already!

It’s a mess, let’s not even mention how the dad never really fit in the family, or the show. Every episode also tend to be the same as the previous one, usually involving Justin getting mad at Raja who did something maybe inapropriate, or that embarrassed Justin or something, not intentionally or anything, he just didn’t realize it – being different and all.

So then Justin will get back at him, they’ll fight, but in the end Raja is a good kid and Justin knows it and they’re friend again. Snores. Happy ending. My head hurts, and I just won’t watch that show anymore.
