Criminal Minds: The Instincts

By fred | November 6, 2008

Criminal Minds(S04E06) I guess everyone has their favorites, you probably have your own one or two characters on this show, or any other show you watch, that you simply like more than the others. Doesn’t mean the others aren’t any or loved, just that this one person is closer to your heart, or that you tend to find that when he or she is more involved, episode get better — or you enjoy them more.

For instance, on Criminal Minds I’ve always really liked Reid, and I always thought that the more he is involved the better the episode is. Reid isn’t really a profiler, and he’s not really an FBI agent, he’s not really anything you can sum up to a traditional label. Reid is a genius mind that doesn’t work like any other, sometimes it’s almost as if he wasn’t human, even though, as Prentiss recently noted, “he’s so life-like“.

Another really good episode, even if I found a little odd and even could be seen as a lack of continuity that JJ’s replacement wasn’t around at all this week. I mean, she’s been introduced to the team last week, so while JJ is still in charge - and did a wonderful job with the mother - it wouldn’t have been off, to me, to have her around just so that she gets used to how the team works and how things are done, no?

Anyways, from the opening scene I knew this was going to be good, because it was a dream of Reid’s which means he would be very much involved in this episode. You could tell it was a dream, because of how it was directed, because of Reid standing there in the long corridor ending with a door, and of course in the end it had nothing to do with him really, but I loved that Reid is dreaming of JJ’s baby. He’s been pretty obsessed (/worried?) with her pregnancy lately, I wonder if that’s just how his mind works or if there’s something more there…

Still liking very much the interactions between Reid & Prentiss, and while the whole team commented about him falling asleep on the plane, I especially loved that it was Emily who picked on him. But while there were obvious reasons for Reid’s memories to be triggered, and for him to have those dreams, wasn’t it a but odd that he was suddenly falling asleep everywhere all the time ??

I guess with Morgan, at the parents’ house, it makes sense. They had to spend the night, it’s not uncommon for one to sleep with the other is awake, but right there, in the middle of the day, on the plane ?? That’s very unlike Reid, what had he been doing last night ? Reading books and books about pregnancy ??

Anyways, the case in itself was a pretty good one, I loved the way JJ and Hotch dealt with the parents, loved also their reactions and how they didn’t deal with things in the same ways, how they were pretty much separated during the events but reunited at the end, and the funeral scene was also pretty good, just like Prentiss’ interrogation afterward — she does get pretty intense at times.
