Criminal Minds: Catching Out

By fred | October 30, 2008

Criminal Minds(S04E05) I might be wrong on this one, but it’s the feeling I got watching this episode : this season more than ever, Criminal Minds shows that each case is processed by an entire team. Obviously this has been the case from day one, that the concept of the show : a team of profilers who come to assist the local authorities, a team who will together help catching the bag guys.

But while there’s always been team work from the beginning, and while there can always be an episode where someone will be more involved or more active in a case than the rest of the team will be, I just have this impression that, this season – and ever since Gideon left – it is even more a team effort, where everyone is equally involved.

Not that Gideon used to play the little chief who needs to do everything, or that Morgan isn’t the action hero, obviously he still is, but it’s just an overall feeling I got, by seeing everyone working the case both on individual groups and together as a whole. Am I mistaking?

Anyways, another really good episode where the team did his job, and did it well, the local police didn’t really get in the way and accepted to retract the name and get less people involved, it was happened as you’d think it should so there isn’t much to talk about here. I’ll just say that, as mentioned before, Morgan did play the action hero once again, something that Hotch did sorta reproach him not too long ago, but it’s not like he isn’t profiling at the same time (well, not literally at the same time) and that whole scene was pretty cool – especially Hotch saving the day by being able to shoot the unsub on the running train, with Morgan in close proximity, all that while inside a moving vehicle himself. Hotch might have looked a bit off lately, and last week they all insisted he “screwed up” for some reason, but clearly he knows what he’s doing.

On the field at least, cause he wasn’t apparently aware of what would happen once JJ would leave, which I find more than unlikely. I mean, she’s an essential part of the team, that has been illustrated many times in the past, and she has been pregnant for a while now. So how are we to believe that Hotch did not bother to look into a replacement or was made aware not that something was being worked on, but of what was being worked on ?? Come on…

I didn’t really liked that – unless that was to say Hotch is not really doing his work all that good these days, but I don’t think so – and just because he would have known about Agent Todd doesn’t mean the others had to be aware of it as well, so they could have kept the little opening with Morgan. Speaking of, that was a fun scene, and I loved how he ran to talked about it with Reid and Prentiss, I liked it even more how they teased of him and he didn’t really liked that and ran away. After all those time teasing, it’s about time he was on the receiving end for a change!

Ever since they got involved into a hostage situation, it seems Reid and Emily have gotten closer, doesn’t it? Often they’re now seen having fun, joking or just discussing with one another, really cute. I loved her question to Reid, “Are you considering it ? Having baby geniuses one day ?

On a somewhat related news, I loved when JJ had him feel the baby.
Reid: Does that freak you out ?
JJ: No, not at all. Why, does it freak you out?
Reid: Very much so.

About Agent Todd, JJ’s replacement, I have to say I’m left pretty much not feeling anything really. She didn’t made much on an impression on me, neither good or bad. The introduction scene with Morgan was, all things considered, a very typical move (not to say clichéd) for the show, and I guess we’ll have to see how things go once she’s actually involved with everyone and needs to do her work.

What did you think of the episode ? Do you think Reid and Prentiss could become intimate, or are they just too much brother & sister ? Will Garcia hate Todd ?
