Criminal Minds: 52 Pickup

By fred | November 27, 2008

Criminal Minds(S04E09) Last week the episode looked like it was going to be great, but alas turned out to be quite disappointing as the cliché ending kind of ruined it all, but we won’t let this little misstep break an otherwise pretty awesome season the show has been delivering so far. Last week JJ was already missing, but we didn’t get to see agent Todd pick a case and present it to the team.

Instead, that crazy George came to Reid and initiated their little game. So this week we finally got to see his first pick, how she would present the case to everyone and how it would work. It was important not because she’s the latest addition to the team, even if that’s only temporary, but also because so far I haven’t liked very much the way she’s been introduced, which seemed to go through all possible clichéd ways it could.

Sadly, this wasn’t about to change. Nope, I didn’t the way she first made a mistake, thus losing Hotch’s trust, but then got to work with Prentiss and proved she was more than capable, thus regaining his trust so all can be well, and now she was really be part of the team. (And by the way, I didn’t see - and still don’t - her asking if the unsub could have known Vanessa as a great instinct about the profile or nothing, it seems a lot more like just a guess, a question thrown out while not even believing it herself.)

I especially didn’t liked it because it seems to me that telling the truth has always been an essential part of the way they work, from day one, and one would imagine that’s not because Hotch is like that but because that’s something that stands for all profiler teams. What I’m saying is, how could she not know that ? Wouldn’t JJ have told her that among the few things to never do, lying was one of them ?? As Hotch told her, isn’t a huge part of her job to build a trust relationship ?? I’m still not liking her that much, and I especially don’t like the way she’s been introduced so far.

Other than that, a pretty good case and an even better episode! Going into the world of another kind of profilers, the “pick-up artists”, out team had a lot of its plate. Out of this came two main events that I absolutely loved :

- First of all, the most obvious one, Prentiss and Todd having to deal with the pick-up master. When Reid started to suggest that it should be someone he had already showed interest for, aka Prentiss, I actually started to laugh out loud even before I saw her reaction to the news. And yeah, that guy was out there, and to see him try to hit on Prentiss was just great. Even better was to see how she - and Todd - got to play with him at the club, and totally manipulated him so well that he started to lose it, got quite frustrated, spilled out all his inner rage and thus giving them the information they needed.

- Second, and probably even better, was to see Reid try go show his “game” at the club. At first he was his usual self, filled with statistics and murder talks, and I can totally see one of the girl he was talking to asking whether or not he was, the unsub. But then, and with very little help from Morgan (if any), he managed to be a lot better, pulling out magic tricks and getting a girl - a very cute one at that - interested.

Now before anything else, about that magic : how did he do that? I mean, he didn’t even get close to her, how could he have planted his card up in her hair?? What!?? Is that classified information as well?? I gotta say it was pretty cool to see him like that, and I’m glad she called him back (after the case was over I mean). They don’t really know each other yet nor to they live nearby, so it might not really go anywhere, but I sure hope it will, would love to see Reid in a relationship.

I do have a couple of question though, things that seemed odd to me : one, how did Reid got her number ? Something seemed quite odd about there. Okay, she called him, but how would he know it was her ? Does he has tracked down every number that calls him ? Why did get rush to the bar after an aborted phone call ? Why didn’t he call her sooner ? Why was her phone ringing (vibrating) while he was leaving a message on her voice mail ? Should we really care about all or any of that ?

All in all a really good episode, and a new door open for Reid in an interesting path I sure he would engage into. What did you think about it? Do you want Reid to see Austin again ?
