Chuck: Chuck vs the Helicopter

By fred | October 3, 2007

Chuck(S01E02) Well, I never tried to hide the fact that I basically hated this show, as I found it really not funny, and not at all saw it the way some people seem to do. That is, to me it is obvious they do take themselves quite seriously, I did not see - while watching the pilot - any clues that they were not taking it seriously, that it was all a joke, or a parody.

But that was the pilot, now we had a “real” episode, even though it was still in a form of introducing not stories, but plot ideas and characters interactions and how they were to react with each others. What’s the verdict now, did it change my opinion on it, was it able to pul it off, or not.

Simply said : absolutely not. Au contraire, this episode was a plain confirmation of what I first thought of it : the show sucks.

I just do not understand how anyone can like it, and enjoy watching it. I honestly don’t. Let’s put it that way, the show as two different kind of ways to be looked at :

* First off, we look at it as a spy-action show. As such, we care about the main plot and, well, it sucks. Not to mention the basis of the show, the guy who got all those data from CIA and NSA uploaded into his brain, which is the stupidest thing ever - and by the way, as it was - in a way - even acknowledged during this episode, this is a basis that doesn’t even allow the show to last for very long.

Because when it comes to intelligence, having a large database is useful for sure, and when it’s 2 days old it sure is a major thing. But after a couple of weeks, it’s starting to get old. This is a domain where one of the most important things is to keep it up to date. It needs to be constantly updates with fixed and new intel. on a daily basis, or else it just looses all of its efficiency & relevance.

But again, let’s pretend this doesn’t matter, and look into today’s episode. What kind of a plot was that ? It’s the usual piece of crap you have to be bored with as soon as you know what’s going to happened, and with such lame plot that comes in about twelve seconds in.

The doctor comes in, with the name, look and attitude of the bad guy. Of course he is, and it’s boring, all the way down to him not killing his enemies when he should, but leaving them just enough space and time so that they can break out and reserve the situation. Snore.

But wait, there’s another way to look at the show.

* Comedy. Let’s pretend it’s a comedy, and look at it that way. Only sadly, this will not enhance in any ways our experience of it. Still the same stupid plots and situations, and again : this is in no way funny.
