Chuck: Chuck Versus The Undercover Lover

By fred | January 25, 2008

Chuck(S01E12) So you know how it goes : no, I don’t really like this show, yet yes, I did watch it. I just figured, due to the strike those were the last two of the season, and given how for one reason (it was new) or another (Rachel Bilson) I pretty much ended up watching the whole show so far, I might as well go ahead and watch the first season completely. It’s not like there was still 11 episodes or something like that.

Before we go into this episode, I just want to repeat how, while I may not be a fan of this show, I hate NBC for their stupid scheduling tactic and I can only hope that the large majority of the people who watched this episode did not watched that crap that came after, even if they came back for the season finale after wards. Nothing would please me more to see NBC’s numbers and read something like 8 million, 4 million, 8 million. Hey, one can dream, right?

About this episode, I’ll just say that I watched it, and it only confirms what I’ve thought of the show all along. I don’t like it, I really don’t get its sense of humor, I guess, cause I’m assuming some of the things I find stupid had people laughing.

This episode was very special, because apparently writers felt the need to show that Casey was actually, you know, a human being. They needed to do so, or felt like they did, because I don’t think this was really needed, but they did and so we had a glimpse of his past, where he met this girl that he never stopped loving. Ah, isn’t that sweet?

And because she’s not dead after all Casey gets all depressed and starts to drink, like any looser does in about every movie so this time, because it’s on Chuck, it’s funny. I guess. Just like the whole fight scene with both him & Chuck tied up to one another was cool, because it was in this show. Otherwise it would have been just a stupid cliché, like the jump into the pool was for instance.

Those are classic examples of why I don’t like this show : I find those moments to have nothing of a parody, I don’t see them being a spoof of anything, because they don’t do nothing else, nothing more than what we’ve seen James Bond and the others do before. So no, I did not like that one bit. I guess I’m getting used to it though, cause I saw that coming, a lot, and while I did not laugh, not even at Casey’s definition of acceptable losses, I wasn’t that bored either.

And don’t even get me started on that whole bit about Chuck’s sister and captain awesome and their gift. That was really bad. I mean really, really really bad. They’re trying to be cool because it’s the girl who wants the TV and the guy who wants the washing machine, how modern of them, but there was nothing good or interesting or funny in that whole bit, Morgan - who’s apparently lost his girlfriend somewhere? - playing the shrink did not make me laugh, please let’s not mention that Buy More crap, and in the end I just feel even more that I already did that Ellie & Awesome are just not made for one another.

Because when they write scripts without caring about characters but only redoing the stupid cliché situations we’ve all grown to hate, that’s what happens. I mean did he really think she’d be happy to get the washing machine ? Did she really let it slide because once she pointed it out he made the exchange ? Are those really people, like actual people, the human being kind ?

In the end Chuck is still as stupid as always, Morgan remains annoying, Ellie & Awesome the Buy More people deserves to be killed (I mean really, did anyone “liked” (I can’t bare the thought or anyone actually laughing at that scene) at the whole “Taraaaa!” bit ? Really !?), but at least Casey is back to his real self, I guess.

And to end on something that did made me laugh, well smile : “It’s aliiiiiiiiiive!

Let’s hope the next one will be better, see you soon.
