Chuck: Chuck Versus The Marlin

By fred | January 25, 2008

Chuck(S01E13) Same player, play again. One hour after the previous episode came this one, and because of the writers’ strike, despite getting a full order for 22 episodes, this one will be the last one of the season. That is yet another show you can add on your list of shows that is vanishing away completely from our screens. Let’s all really hope that the strike gets resolved soon, because this has been going on for way too long. (And to make sure networks understand that, don’t watching anything they offer as “replacement”.)

As for this show, well, I didn’t really like the last episode, but then again I’m not a huge fan of the show so here we go. Who knows, maybe this very last episode will have me changing my mind and realizing how wrong I was ?

Nah, who am I kidding? I’m not wrong, I’m never wrong, unless when I’m not right but that doesn’t count. But this episode did not had me change my mind, at all. Far from it, in fact, very far from it.

I could say that, somehow, this episode may work as a season finale because it had this little special thing to its story, except that it ended well whereas a season finale would have probably end with some cliffhanger where Chuck was being taken away, but Sarah wasn’t far, like hanging on to the Helicopter to get him back, later. Like next season.

But once again I fail to see anything good about this show, in that I didn’t really enjoy watching this episode. And even worse than the fact that they still play with Chuck/Sarah romance card that goes nowhere in pretty much the same way they have ever since the show started, although it moved really fast as first and we now feel like we’re being sent weeks ago, where’s the fun ?

Again, they did lots of clichés and the whole thing was more than highly predictable, but there was no second-degree humor, no parody element, the show doesn’t get completely fun and ludicrous in a good, making fun of itself kinda way. Instead it takes itself too seriously, and assume that somehow we’re supposed to find it cool. I’m sorry, but I don’t see it.

Last episode I wondered how Ellie & Awesome could be together, because sometimes that guy felt completely dumb, at least. Well here he went as far as to ask her to be his wife, and for some reason (fear to be alone?) she said yes. Jesus Christ! At least that means they’ll be moving out, or?

Did anyone not see the whole stupid bit about the ring play long before it did ? Because of course when Chuck was handed the ring it meant he was going to loose it, or someone would steal it away. And of course it would have ended up inadvertently in the hands of some of his friends, like Morgan for instance, and of course said friend would take it the wrong way, and of course Chuck would eventually get he ring back. Of course.

Because it always happens like that, and once again : where was the parody here ? Where was the thing that makes it not a stupid cliché like we’ve seen and been bored with so many times already, but turned it into a spoof, because they weren’t just doing it, but making fun of it also ? All I saw was them doing the exact same thing that bored me too many times before, and yes I got bored this time again, too.

BTW: Who is stupid enough to actually keep a ring that valuable in some stupid locker on his local Buy More ? Couldn’t he just bring that home ? Oh no, right, because (a) anyone can enter in his house, just push the window of his room, which is never closed apparently, and (b) Ellie would have known. Because a ring like that “smells”, a lot. Maybe not to you and me, but girls do smell it, and I mean actually smell

diamond, not sense through their boyfriend’s face or attitude that something’s up, no they really smell diamond. Like a cat or a dog, ony those don’t actually smell diamonds, only girls can.
