Chuck: Chuck Versus The First Date [season premiere]

By fred | September 30, 2008

Chuck(S02E01) I know I know, last season I kept saying how I didn’t really like this show, and I would probably still say the same today, expect that just like last season I keep watching it, and this time I can’t say it’s for Rachel Bilson. So I guess there must be something else that draws me back to this show, which is probably also part of the reason you and many others do, it’s (kinda) fun.

I’ll be honest, I didn’t really remember where we left off Chuck and everybody else, it’s been so long since a new episode of Chuck that I sorta forgot. But I remembered the premise of the show at least, not that it was required because thanks to a nice little narrative device it was all explain very rapidly at the beginning of the episode, allowing new viewers to jump in and not feel like they were missing something to fully appreciate the show.

It was a great comeback, I’m pretty sure all fans will agree. It was everything you’d expect from the show, Chuck in dangerous situation because he just couldn’t stay in the car, of course, and rescued at the last minute by Casey and Sarah before they all got busted and need to escape all over again. Action everywhere, gorgeous Sarah, cool fights, and comedy, what’s not to like?

As added bonus you even found a new Chuck, one that was able to fully embrace his other identity and not only look like he’s actually a spy, but also outsmart the bad guy thanks to a genius use of Morgan’s geekness, which I have to admit really kicked ass. And even better than Chuck going all sentimental on Casey and the later being troubled by it, maybe also due to his secret missing of killing Chuck, was the Chuck & Sarah moment.

Chuck managed to ask her out, for real, and she totally said yes. She really meant it, hence no gun and some flirting that was 100% real and admitted this time, something I’m sure fans will have gone crazy over.

And yet, I have to complain, of course. A few things, including some really big problems. First of all, and I realize that’s probably the kind of humor people expect and love from this show, but Morgan’s quite unusual method of “interview” really didn’t work for me. I know what it is supposed to do, but it doesn’t make me laugh.

On to the real problems I had with this episode, things that to me don’t make no sense and really hurt the show and the enjoyment one can get from it. First, while I completely understand that they wanted to show Casey sneaking in on Chuck and getting ready to kill him, only to back down at the last minute when he found out that the new intersec didn’t work as expected and Chuck remained the only one, and this his mission was aborted, this made no sense whatsoever.

I’m so glad to have Chuck back. This episode reminded me of all the reasons why I love Chuck.

Starting with Adam Baldwin. His dry humor cracks me up. And I knew he wouldn’t be able to kill Chuck.

And the Buy Mores scenes were top notch. Hmm . . . Performance reviews are due soon. Maybe I can set up my own cage match here at the office.
