Chuck: Chuck Versus The Ex

(S02E06) It’s quite a shame that this show isn’t doing better than it does so far this season, because it’s actually a lot of fun. I know I wasn’t the biggest fan of the show last season, but I think things have evolved and this sophomore season is a much better, stronger and funnier one. I never stopped watching the show ever since it premiered last year, but this season - and especially with the past few episodes - I’ve been having lots of fun each time !
Sure, the show is filled with plot holes and you shouldn’t even look too much into the premise of the show and the way things go down, because that’s just the Chuck way and thinking about it will only ruin the fun I think. I mean, we all know that a second intersect won’t give Chuck his life back, but everyone acts like it was the case so you have to play along.
I also smile every time Chuck “flashes” on someone, and yet has to be given an expose of who the guy is and what he does by the bug boss, even though the premise of the show is that all those information are now stored in… Chuck’s brain! And sure, it seems odd that every other cop/agent can know about Chuck Carmichael, the spy with the Buy More cover (because apparently they only secret must be about the intersect part), even civilian can know about it know, as Chuck’s ex/new-girlfriend Jill, and yet Chuck’s best friends, Buy More colleagues, employers, of even his own sister cannot be told about it. Even though, and without going into details and revealing the whole truth, Chuck just telling everyone he’s a CIA spy would made his life much easier, wouldn’t it?
But again, close your eyes on this and enjoy the rest of the show, and it can be an awful lot of fun. Even the Buy More plots, which I usually disliked, have been working for me recently. This week again, Jeff proved to still be a source of laughs as no other (I totally see why everyone quits if he does, things just wouldn’t be the same without that guy around…), and everything while somewhat “unusual” didn’t go too far into the over-the-top crazy, which I like.
And of course, there’s Chuck. Chuck who’s become quite accustomed to playing the spy and getting himself out of troubles on his own, even saving everyone’s ass every once in a while - or more often that you’d imagine. This week, we looked back into the past as his ex-girlfriend Jill, who broke his heart, was coming back. Jordana Brewster was a perfect match for the role, also she looked very good with that Tina Fey look on her. I really liked her so I’m glad she’s apparently going to stick around for a bit.
It was obvious she broke Chuck’s heart and things weren’t fully over between them She was impressed by Chuck when he had the whole CIA playing along - loved to see Casey and Sarah in disguise, especially Casey - but once it turned out he was all lies, she was running away. But once things were explained (without mention of the CIA yet), she did fall back and kiss him quite fast.
Though she still never explained how and why she trusted Bryce when Chuck was accused of cheating, and quite soon ended up with Bryce, Chuck’s best friend (if you can still call him that, Bro Code anyone?). By the way, with the sweeps kicking in and everything, I sure hope they won’t bring him back again, like stealing yet another girl from Chuck, again.
Zachary Levi is also to be credited for the success of the show, because he is the one making it all work. If you care so much about everything he goes through, about the love triangle he ends up with, about his struggle to have a “normal” life and be happy with his girlfriend, he you buy into all those crazy plots it’s really because he makes it all work.
That’s why I totally saw it as possible that Chuck would really believe his whole speech about the anti-dote being in his saliva hence why he had to kiss Casey. That could have been too much, but he sold it and it really worked. Plus, having Jill show up the next second to say how ridiculous this all sounded was also perfect. Even though, and I never took bio-chemistry lesson myself, but to me that whole saliva non-sense sounded just as likely as their solution to create an anti-dote for a deadly virus : just inject said poison to someone, took his blood, a little trip in the centrifuge and bingo: you got your cure!
Anyways, it all still worked great, and there were many many jokes that were just laughing out loud funny, my favorite probably being Chuck listening to Jill’s conversation on the phone, and commenting it while not realizing they could actually hear him! That’s when he turned into a crazy-stalker, and that made me laugh like Hell!
What was your favorite moment of the episode ? Which of Chuck’s girlfriend do you think is better for him, the hot blonde or the smoking hot brunette ? Who’s ready to pound some plastic ?
