Cavemen out, Carpoolers in
By fred | October 3, 2007
ABC had two new sitcoms premiering : the most talked about trashed new show this season, Cavemen, and one I hadn’t heard much about, Carpoolers.
The two air the same day on the same network, have their name starting with “Ca”, and are about a bunch of guys. But apart from this, they are very different. Very.
Cavemen is a piece of shit, plain and simple. The original pilot was trashed by anyone who saw it, critic or not, because it was the worst thing ever to be done. And I still fail to see how anyone could have even saw why anything in it was supposed to be thought as funny.
It was pretty much nothing but poorly conceived black jokes, only about “cavemen” instead. And honestly, they did not “retooled” the pilot or changed it a little. Instead they did trash it out, recast, rewrote a pretty much completely new script, and in the end I have to say that the piece of trash that aired on ABC was actually far from being as bad as the original one was.
Really. Which tells you about how bad it was, because that episode was still a succession of black racial jokes, but towards cavemen, os it’s funny I guess, with nothing else. It was still awful, but really : how could it have been any different ? They don’t have no concept.
Let’s make a sitcom with cavemen in it. And they expect to get anythingout of such an “idea” ?? Come on. It’s like saying, hey I got a new idea for a sitcom, it a sitcom with 4 guys in it. That’s it, that’s my idea. Nothing else. No situations, no characters, no nothing.
Carpoolers, on the other hand, has an idea - four guys carpooling going to/from work, and they have a bunch of characters going along, starting with our four boys. And as odd as this might sounds, they do pull it off quite good. The pilot was petty good, had some funny moments and interesting characters. While it wasn’t hilarious and is nowhere near a 30 Rock, How I Met Your Mother or The Office, it still was a cool moment of fun, and it could grow into an nice sitcom.
A lot of people tuned in to see what Cavemen was all about, but I think, hope, no one will go tune back. And whole watching Fox’s Bones is a better choice, Carpoolers might be worth your DVR for one of those moments when there’s nothing good on, and nothing else better on your DVR.
