Cashmere Mafia: Conference Call

By fred | January 14, 2008

Cashmere Mafia(S01E02) Yes, I know, this one aired a few days ago already. But I wasn’t sure if I wanted to check it out or not, I thought I might, but I wasn’t really impressed by the pilot so I recorded it, but stopped there.

And today since I had a little time, and knowing that a third episode was coming this week and if I wanted to - maybe - give it a try, I needed to have seen this one, I decided to watch it. Also, I had heard some people saying that they were giving the show a second chance after this episode, or that it improved over the first one, so I though what the Hell, why not give it a try ?

I did, and it’s not that I regret it, but improved ? A second chance ? Really ? I mean, why ?

No, it did not get any better. Or maybe it’s because it’s not new anymore and I start to notice its flaws more than I did the first time around, but this wasn’t good, I would even say it was worse in fact ! It did not improve from the previous episode, it basically only did the same thing once again, which by definition makes it worse, since we were expected improvements.

I think the main problem with the show is that it’s not fun, the girls aren’t having a good time with their lives, and so we are not having a good time watching them go through all their soapy drama. Again, with Sex And The City, since the comparison always go there, it was fun. You liked and were looking forward to watching the show, because you had a great time.

The show didn’t take itself seriously, it was filled with humor, and whatever happened the girls were not just there for each other, but they had fun. When one of them had some “drama” in her life or whatnot, the other three were always there to make fun of her, to cheer her up and make her forget about the problems. But here, in Cashmere Mafia, they’ll only get sad as well and they will all moan together and drown in sorrow. Why would I want to watch that ?

Plus, it feels like this show can’t help but go over all the clichés they can, and it really gets boring. You can see coming absolutely everything on the show, it’s all so predictable. Overall it feels like the story with Caitlin, the blonde one.

In a very written-by-a-guy plot she’s “exploring her sexuality” and maybe going lesbian, only I don’t see it happening. I actually like the character, which I believe is the best of the bunch, but she doesn’t seem all that confused to me, nor does she look all that attracted to that other girl. As you’re watching them, you don’t feel what you would expect to be feeling. In fact, you don’t feel anything at all !

Look at that scene with the two of them in a meeting, looking and winking at each other, was there anything there ? At all ? Did you feel anything but boredom, and maybe anger towards such a lame thing ?
