Canterbury’s Law: What Goes Around…
By fred | March 30, 2008
(S01E03) I was clearly not impressed with the two first episodes of this new series, and obviously I wasn’t alone given the poor ratings it has received, so much that Fox didn’t wait and already moved it to this dead Friday. If it’s a sign of anything, it is that they intend to cancel the show very soon.
Still, for some reason I decided to tune in one last time and see whether or not this show could become something better, before Friday starts getting a little better as soon as next week, when a couple of shows will be back on CBS. So over the week-end I sat down and watched the latest episode in date of Julianna Margulies’ latest show…
And I can now say without any question that this was my last time, I won’t be back next week, if ever the show is still on. This episode wasn’t just bad, though it really was, but there’s one way to sum up the overall feeling I was left after sitting through the hour : filler.
As is boring, it was a pretty boring hour, one in which nothing happened basically. Ever since the very first episode, they made sure to really insist on quite a few things : that Canterbury isn’t afraid to break the rules, that she will cross the line in order to make sure she’ll win, for her client. Because of course she always does it for her client, not for personal interest.
They really made sure to let us know that, by showing it and emphasizing it and having as many people as possible to notice it and talk about, the louder the better. And this week was no different, not about that, or that fact that the poor girl is traumatized by her son’s abduction, how she blames herself for his disappearance, how it’s changed her, and all that crap.
Oh and, of course, how could I forget the how she drinks herself to sleep everything, how she gets drunk to forget, because of course she’s an alcoholic now. And all of that was - once again - said over & over & over again, with the usual same plots and boring situation and of course the now usual flashback to that infamous day where her son was kidnapped.
And to really make sure we all get it, that’s she crosses the line when she “has to” and all that crap, they’re already going after her and having her placed under arrest. Yes, this is only the third episode and we barely got to meet Canterbury and her co-workers, but they felt like we would care for her and her cliché problems I guess, so here we go.
Only problem is, from the start it was obvious they were going after her, and that she would end up handcuffs on. Just like we all know she won’t go to jail, quite obviously. (Unless this was written with a 4 or 5 episodes run for the entire series in mind maybe…) And because they had nothing else to do this week, they just throw one filler moment after the other, with Canterbury crossing the line, with her drinking, with her obsession over her missing son, …
And none of the stories with her co-workers were any good, really. One has issue with his father and wants to work with her because she’s the best, because she wins about all the time, blah blah I don’t care. The other one, she can’t really practice law (yet). We knew that already, that wasn’t anything new, that wasn’t funny, just boring.
No wonder why this show is tanking and as I said previously, maybe episode 4 will air next week, but I would be really surprised to see it going any further than that.
