Breaking Bad: Seven Thirty-Seven [season premiere]

By fred | March 9, 2009

Breaking Bad(S02E01) Let’s hope that the Emmy win will bring more viewers to this little gem, because it certainly is one of the best thing television has to offer these days. The first season was cur short due to the infamous writers’ strike, but according to creator Vince Gilligan this turned out to be a blessing in disguise for the show, because the original plan for the end of last season wouldn’t have been “too big too soon” — and now they were able to adjust things a little.

But the overall plan remains the same, and whatever was meant to come will come, only a little later on (probably for this new season’s finale) and that’s not a problem. Because while this show is never leaving us with an episode where nothing happens, it always took its time. In every other show out there, some things just happens quickly, they’re overlooked, because that’s not what it is all about.

Here, on this show, that’s all it is about. Cooking meth, or killing someone, isn’t as easy as pulling a trigger, it has repercussions and meanings, it affects people, it takes time, and it takes planning. Because never mind his new calling, Walter is a teacher, and a chemist. Which means that he doesn’t just jump into the first idea that comes to mind, he needs to analyze it, plan how everything will go down, to make sure everything will not just blow up in his face!

Last time we saw them, Walt and Jesse witness their new partner Tuco killed a man with his bare hands for nothing, and it seems that he might have been considering whether or not he should let them stay alive with such a piece of information. As Jesse pointed out, they had become a risk for him, and while they were indeed providing some of the best meth in years, what was going to happen once he decide they were too much of a threat?

It was hard for them to get to a place where they could finally cook & sell their shit, but their alliance with Tuco might not really have been the best choice ever, and as always with those people, you can’t really get out when you want. And while Walter had calculated that he needed to stay in business with the crazy motherfucker for at least 11 more weeks, so that he’d have collected enough money for his family once he’ll be gone, the possibility that Tuco might be looking at getting ride of them changed everything.

And this is when Jesse took out a gun. But being the chemist teacher he is, Walter couldn’t just go out on impulse, he needed to know more about the plan, see how it would go and how it could go wrong. Of course, Jesse’s plan was limited to getting a gun and shooting, “bang bang bang,” but without more thoughts behind it. Once again we got to see why those two managed to survive how long without getting caught yet : Walter took time to think things through, and of course his infinite knowledge of chemistry is a big help.

This is exactly what his step-brother realized too, watching the tape of the two of them stealing stuff. It was hilarious to see Hank watch the tape and make fun of them and their inexperience, and in the end they are getting closer and closer to the truth. They know those guys are new in town, know their chemistry yet don’t have much street experience. How long until he puts that together with Walter’s new behavior and his disappearances all day and starts to wonder…
