Breaking Bad: …And The Bag’s In The River

(S01E03) It wasn’t around last week, and I missed it. Oh sure, this show is still quite new - as this was only the third episode - but I don’t need any more to know that it is a great show, one that I do enjoy every week, when it’s on, and I’m sure this won’t be away anytime soon. When it first came out, or before even, it has been compared to Weeds, but let me tell you this : it has nothing to do with Weeds, none, nada.
No, because this show is so much better than Weeds, and I’m not saying that just because last season’s of Weeds was a disappointment, although it doesn’t hurt that’s for sure. But, because it’s on Showtime, on Weeds people might be able to say “fuck” and we can hear it when they do, but Weeds remains a pretty “family friendly” show, whereas Breaking Bad is not, it’s dark, it’s funny, it’s dirty, it’s provocative, it’s fun, it’s just great, it really is.
See that opening scene, when they’re flushing away nothing but human flesh, yes this thing was nothing but human remains, and a gun, and that’s how dirty the show can get. But that’s also how it goes, really, when you enter the drug business - especially when it’s not really your domain of expertise. If somehow Nancy always finds a way to get out of our problems magically without (anyone) getting hurt and she’s got it fine, despite all, here things have gotten real dirty, real fast.
They haven’t made any sales yet, they probably didn’t get any money, or barely, but they’re already in an awful lots of problems ! And nothing says it’s going to get any better soon.
This episode was all about Walter, about him and his part of the deal, because as everyone knows : “coin flip is sacred“. So Walter has to kill someone. It’s been obvious for a while now that he has to do it, it must be done, there’s no way around it. But I actually liked that this was a real issue, one that’s not easy t deal with for him. Because this isn’t TV (wait, what?), this is a real guy, a normal, simple guy, with cancer. And killing someone, like that, that’s premeditated murder, and that’s not something easy to do for a chemistry teacher.
So I liked that it did not just shot him and moved on to the next thing, and the two lists he made were kinda funny in that the reasons to let him live where nothing but the same one over & over again, using different words : killing is bad, murder is wrong, it’s not right. But the same could have been made, of course, for the other column, and he should have, actually, put his mind there as well : he will kill you, torture your family, rape your wife, murder everyone you know.
And that’s what bugged me a little, that he seemed not to try and convinced himself to do it, but to not do it. That he seemed to actually question himself, for real, whether or not he should do it. Like there was a possibility that he could actually let him walk. I mean come-on!
Of course the guy is playing it nice and friendly and absolutely not angry or vengeful, he wants to live. For him to be pissed off and threatens you and your family is like begging to be killed. That’s not what he wants, he wants to live, and to kill you. So when he mentions that he knows Walter’s name, knows about his family, this should have been a trigger that there was no way in Hell that guy could walk out of here, he had to be killed.
So to have Walter kill him in the end only by chance, because of a broken plate, because he found out that one piece was missing from the trash, that really annoyed me. So far Walter was always really good at dealing with everything that was happening to him, to the both of them, he was quick to make decisions when it was needed, he was smart, though not always the brightest, and here he was acting like a damned fool !
Because had he not broken anything, don’t be stupid : the guy was still coming after him anyways, right there in the basement, or later, but he was coming back. And to think that Walter only killed him realized that obvious fact by accident, that really disappointed me a little, he’s better than that, he’s smarter than that.
Anyways, this was a really good episode nonetheless, and as they now got ride of both bodies (since I’m guessing Walter got himself that plastic thing and made the body disappeared nicely) we have seen that things are probably not going to be alright for them, as the DEA found the car of the dead cousins and know there might be somekind of camper/lab that cooks really pure meths around.
I’m not sure I care about the girl stealing shoes, that whole thing was mostly useless, but I wonder what Walt is going to confess to his wife. Because as we’ve seen today, it’s not just a bad cough he’s got, he even passed out for 15 minutes out of it, so it’s going to be really hard for him to keep hiding it from everyone, especially his family, his wife.
Another really great episode of a show that definitely is some must-see TV, I can’t wait for the next episode !
