Bionic Woman: Do Not Disturb

By fred | November 29, 2007

Bionic Woman(S01E08) Due to circumstances beyond my control I ended up starting by watching this show first. Only now that I did it, I realize that the sign on the door title of the episode, “Do Not Disturb”, was actually meant for all of us to be taken literally.

We really shouldn’t have bothered with it, because again this week what there is left to say is: what an incredible waste of time that was. I’m pretty convinced that this show was doomed to fail from the start, and if this hadn’t been the season where writers decided to go on strike, I am questioning the very fact that NBC would even have the pilot on the air.

Obviously, there is absolutely no creative control behind the show, they have no idea what direction to go and it almost feels like each week some new guy comes up with an idea and changes everything. But in order to “hide” that, they write some stupid “continuity” scene, like that opening scene in the bar which felt so wrong it’s amazing. Like we were to believe for one second that those people actually go hang out together in some bar, and pretty cheap ones at that. Yeah, right!

So once again Jamie had for mission to follow some guy this week, but once again she ended up blowing the whole thing and then showing off her bionics to prove she could actually do something. The only thing that made me smile during that scene was the fact that they seem to realize this chick is braindead, so they can’t have her following someone without some tech guy in her head, watching the live feed from her eyes, making sure she actually stays on the target.

Cause otherwise, she would just pick up the phone and look the other way, like she did last time.

Here we go with a first continuity mistake, or admittance of stupidity, that was so obvious I want to think I missed something there : we already knew they could see through her eyes, and she could receive whatever signal they decided to send into her ear. Okay, fine.

But still they somehow had not gone the full way with including the possibilities of a full conversation, because they always needed to use some phones to talk. Even when that guy was watching her live feed as she was jumping from roof to roof, in order to talk she needed to have her cellphone out. And not this time ?

So I started by saying that this show completely lacked any creative direction or anything remotely close to it, and the biggest example of that is the absence of the original bionic woman, the real one and cool one. She’s not coming back, because while that main plot about her, the bionic women being sick and slowly loosing control over her bionics, and the dead fiancé’s father being escaped from prison was all very important during the pilot and the first episodes that followed, we’re now supposed to forget all about that, pretend it never happened.
