30 Rock: Somebody To Love

By fred | November 16, 2007

30 Rock(S02E06) So after I watched and loved so much the last episode of The Office, I was quite excited and curious to dive into a new half-hour of 30 Rock, because this show has been absolutely excellent and hilarious since day one, and they never hit any false note, unlike others.

Yet I felt it was going to be hard to top what The Office did, but I never intended to compare the two shows so no worries there. With that said, and I thrilled that we’ve still got a few more episodes of this one to come, because it really is the funniest sitcom out there. I love it.

This episode was once again close to perfection, it didn’t try to do anything else than being funny and making us laugh, and it absolutely succeeded. Again this episode was filled with so many awesome one-liner and hilarious moment it’s hard to think and list them all without quoting the entire episode.

It only tried and did make us laugh out loud, but at the same time and in a very not subtle yet definitely not intrusive at all way it did carry a “message”, in a way South Park does. Yes, this episode dealt with racism and terrorism, but it was done in such a way that you couldn’t be offended, and you couldn’t not laugh.

Once again this episode was great at combining the two main stories and involving pretty much all the characters of the show one way or another, except maybe Jenna. And once again all stories worked perfectly, or Tracy wasn’t carrying a story of its own - something I didn’t like so much when it happened earlier this season - but instead his craziness was used on both stories, and it always worked.

On one hand, you had Jack having a new romance blooming with a girl he couldn’t possibly be seen with, because there was something wrong and oh so terrible about her. That’s right, she’s a Democratic.

On the other hand, Liz was suspecting her new neighbor to be a terrorist, and so to be a proud American Hero she did the only thing she could do : she reported him. Turned out he was only trying to audition for The Amazing Race, but hey, you can never be too careful, right? I just loved how after realizing she made a terrible mistake and feeling sorry for the guy, once he talked about his rage she was already jumping back on him being a terrorist and ready to make another phone call!

And, and the other, other hand we had Kenneth, trying to find (the money for) Jack’s pants, even though he said it wasn’t necessary as he just have dozens of those. It lead to a few stupid bets which resulted in comical situation, and none of it felt like filler or seemed forced, given his personality and who he was betting with, the writers, it was all very natural. And funny.

This was once again another proof that this show is an absolute must-see TV, and the funniest sitcom out there. (And let’s just all pretend that because it’s such a special show, The Office doesn’t really classify as a sitcom, it’s easier that way. For everyone.)

I need to mention a couple (of more) quotes and moments :

- “Are you making Waffles ?” I loved the opening scene, and the moment when Liz & Jack were waiting, to see if they’ll be dead within 10 seconds or not, while in the middle of the split-screen Tracy was dancing. Just great.

- “Your hair is your head-suit.

- Everyone has to wear special “Sheinhardt Wig Company” T-Shirts to help them with some PR, and since they own NBC… Speaking of their problems, here’s a message from the Sheinhardt Wig Company: “We don’t poison the World. Terrorists do.

- I’m going to a party tonight honoring Robert Novak it’s being thrown by John McCaine and Jack Bauer.
- Um. I don’t think he’s real!
- Oh I assure you Lemon, John McCaine is very real.

- “You know I thought you made love like an ugly girl ! So present, so grateful.

- Liz isn’t racist, but the guy has maps! Maps!! And she may have some too, but you know : “I’m a white lady!” Plus, we know her : “I NEVER make assumptions about race. Remember I asked that black guy if he had seen Sideways ?

- Noticed the news scroll during the interview ? I think they’ve been used before (S01E15), maybe they even always used those : “Mysterious visitor from future wins lottery again - Anne Heche leaves husband for dog - Wolf blitzer injured in wolf blitz - News crawl affected by writers strike - using repeat text from previous season

- “They’re orange!

- This is why I got into politics. To stop big companies from hurting the little guy!
- What happened to you that made you this way ??
- In 1998 I got shot in the face by my neighbor’s dog.
- Oh CC I’m so.. wait, what!?

- “A Dog Took My Face And Gave Me A Better Face To Change The World: The Celeste Cunningham Story” By the way, guess what Lifetime movie Pete was watching during the opening scene ?

- “Get the gun away from the dog!

- “PANTS!! PANTS!! PANTS!!

- I purchased a replacement pair of Mr Donaghy’s pants.
- Wow! You must love him as much as I do.

- Don’t mess with Liz, cause she knows people now! “You seem to be defending Raheem an awful lot. I’d hate to have to make another phone call!” Poor Pete had to run away he was so scared! “USA Number One!

- Oh they’ve always been good at product placement on this show, they even played with it and made fun of the whole thing. But tonight they went even further, and I have to admit I loved it, had me laughing for minutes long after it was done !!

- These Verizon wireless phone are just so popular, I accidentally grabbed one belonging to an acquaintance.
- Well sure, cause that Verizon wireless service is just unbeatable. I mean if I saw a phone like that on TV, I would be like “where’s my nearest retailer so I can, get one.” *looks at camera* Can we have our money now ?
