24: Redemption

By fred | November 24, 2008

24(S07E00) Remember last season? The writers’ strike, and how only 8 episodes of the new season of 24 were done, thus resulting in Fox having to delay the return of Jack Bauer for quite some time ? Last season was one season without any Jack Bauer at all, and we’ve been waiting 18 months to see him back. Adding to that how the sixth season of the show was by far the worst, and needless to say, we’ve really been waiting for Jack’s Redemption !

Waiting for January and the new season, Fox knew we couldn’t wait anymore and they gave us this two-hour movie, to help us wait. This was a prelude to next season, to introduce us what Jack did after the end of last season and where he was headed for the next, it was to get us ready for a new day, it was to forget about last season and it was to remind us how much we missed Jack kicking some ass !

And man, what a disappointment that was!

If that was really supposed to get us all excited for the next season, then we have a problem, cause it failed. If that was a preview of things to come and what to expect for Jack’s seventh say, then I’m getting a very uncomfortable feeling that lats season might not keep its title of “worst season of 24″ for long.

Trying to forget about his past, all the while running away from the US government who has lots of questions they’d love to ask, Jack is now hiding in Africa, with an old buddy of his, trying to help some children in a fictional country in Africa, Sangala, where, as it really happens, there’s terror, poverty, war and misery all over the place.

In a not so subtle social commentary on our world, we have children being “recruited” into soldiers to fight the wars adults don’t want to die for, the US not interested in helping because there’s no oil or anything for them to care (other than people dying), and the United Nations represented by the most annoying and coward asshole ever, hiding being a necessity of neutrality and then willing to sell out as soon as he’s given a chance.

And from the start we all know where this is all going to go : we know the soldiers will come for the children, we know Jack will have to get involved, and we know that’s how it will eventually end up at the embassy, surrendering himself to save the children. Two hours and a total lack of surprise all the way through, as the same can be said back in Washington.

From the start it’s easy to see who the bad guys are and what they’re doing, and how they’ll continue to do so. Not once are we wondering what will come next, because we know, and not once are we surprised by what happens. It’s all incredibly slow and predictable from start to finish, thus making it quite boring (at times).

Aidan, I didn’t do no such thing. I just looked at the spam log and didn’t see any comments of yours there, so I don’t no what happened.
Sorry for the trouble and feel free to post again, but rest assured I did not delete anything!
