There were rumors for a few days now that some late night shows might be coming back on the air starting next year, whether the strike was resolved by then or not. With Monday came official announcements confirming that NBC’s two main late night shows will indeed be back on the air, starting January 2nd.
As I discussed earlier, rumors were out all weekend that this could happen, without writers approval or support. This was obviously a tough decision to make for both Leno & O’Brien, who - after Leno got a little pressured to do so as well - have both supported the writers ever since the strike started, as well as paid out of their own pockets non-writing staff on their shows.

There’s been quite some development lately, and many things are still being worked on at this very moment. Nothing is certain yet, no official and definitive announcement have been made, so I will address the latest news.
As you probably know, negotiations between WGA and AMPTP are ended once again, and the AMPTP has entered a new campaign aiming at blaming the WGA for the failure. It seems that they’re objective might also be to get the strike to last a little longer, because they’re greedy assholes some of the big media companies are claiming that the strike will not really have an impact (read: on their gigantic profit).

As you know, writers are striking, trying to get a fair deal for the work they do. It’s not easy, and months within the strike, things are tough for many people. And now this : CBS President Les Moonves just saw his salary fall down. As commented by United Hollywood :
United Hollywood is keeping CBS mogul Les Moonves in its thoughts and prayers. As Bloomberg news reports, Moonves signed a new compensation package worth, on the low end, $30 million dollars per year. But shockingly, his base salary was cruelly cut from $5.6 million in 2006 to a mere $3.5 million in 2007. Such a devastating loss of income must be particularly difficult around the holidays. It certainly is for all of us on strike or put out of work.
Perhaps when this strike is resolved — and we writers, below the line crew, actors and directors have our income restored — we can all chip in to help Les Moonves through his time of need. Until then, Les, if you need a place to crash, I have a futon.
Enough said.

…you will now, for sure. So I just came across this little press release from the AMPTP, and it just pisses me off. First things first, here’s the press release :
December 12, 2007
To the Companies Represented by the AMPTP in the 2007 WGA Negotiations:
By now you know that those in charge at the WGA have injected substantial new doses of vitriol into the important and continuing debate on our industry’s future. On Monday, in a letter to members of the WGA East, the president of that organization wrote: “They lie. And then they lie again. And then they lie some more.”
Then, someone from the WGA offices happily distributed the link to a hijacked parody website that even many rank-and-file WGA members felt was over-the-top. All of this is happening right along with the WGA’s continuing series of concerts, rallies, mock exorcisms, pencil-drops and Star Trek-themed gatherings.

Just a few pictures from fellow actors picketing outside in the cold along with the writers. First off, we have no other than George Costanza’s dad, the one & only Jerry Stiller (who I hear is actually the father of Ben Stiller and not George Costanza…) whose sign actually didn’t read “Serenity Now!” but “Solidarity”.
I just thought it was even better with that little Seinfeld reference, so I decided to fake facts and lie. What? Doesn’t everyone does that nowadays ?
And then you have Kristen Bell, picketing with Heroes writer Jeph Loeb, and obviously no, I did not change that one. Although to be fair, I may not like the writers work on that show, far from it, I do support them 100% there, we all do.
Serenity Now!!!

Here’s another funny thing that comes out of this messy situation, and once again such creativity doesn’t come from the ugly side, go figure. So, there you go :
The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, AMPTP, has it official website at http://www.amptp.org but someone just bought http://www.amptp.com and turned it into some hilarious spoof of the AMPTP’s official site. It looks much like the original, down to the unoriginal logo, and it’s filled with lots of hilarious things. Here’s a few of them, to give you an idea :

It’s not really surprising, given how big networks like NBC had already pulled out weeks ago, but the Television Critics Association winter press tour has now been officially canceled. I guess it only made sense, I mean what is there to talk about anyways ? Deal Or No Deal ? Or Deal Or No Deal ? Maybe a special Deal Or No Deal With The Stars ?

Not so long ago some people started to hope or dream that maybe, after both sides agreed to go back to the negotiation table, something could be worked out. It was a time were things weren’t that bad yet, no too many shows had left the air and people tried to stay optimistic. The idea was that hopefully a deal could be found before Christmas, and starting January 2008 everyone would go back to work for a new year filled with all our beloved series. Positive thinking, I guess.
Sadly, we’re not there. We’re not there today, we won’t be there tomorrow, and by the look of things it’s more likely every day that we won’t be there next month either. Of course, as any good TVoholic, or I believe anyone who knows what’s going on there, I’m siding with the writers. So it shouldn’t be a surprise when I say this is all the fault of those assholes of studios and network executives, those greedy liars of producers, the AMPTP.

Latest news about the strike — Writers Guild of America, West (WGAW) President Patric M. Verrone and Writers Guild of America, East (WGAE) President Michael Winship issued the following message regarding the AMPTP-WGA negotiations :
Dear Fellow Members,
Before we head into negotiations this morning, we want to give you an update on where we stand. On Tuesday, after the companies had requested a four-day break so they could work on their proposals, we returned to the bargaining table. We presented a counter proposal to their streaming proposal of November 29. They presented no new proposals. On Wednesday, the AMPTP again had no new proposals, but they did have detailed questions about our streaming counter proposal and other aspects of our overall proposals – and from the give and take of those discussions, we felt that they might finally be ready to engage in serious bargaining. They told us they would have new proposals for us Thursday. On Thursday, we met at 10am, and they told us their new proposals would be ready shortly. At 5 PM, they told us their proposals still weren’t ready, that they would be working on them late into the night, and that we should come back this morning at 10am. The fact that we saw everyone from the AMPTP leave the building by 6:45pm is not a promising sign, but we will be at the table at 10 AM this morning, ready to receive their new proposal.

Well folk, networks are announcing their schedule for the next two or three months, they’re considering bringing cable shows on their schedule in order to get fresh new content - or doing so already - all things that don’t really tend to say they’re optimistic about the strike.
In fact, things seems to be quite the opposite. Looks like producers are only pretending to deal with WGA and want to look good by making proposals and calling themselves optimistic, but the truth is that they’re apparently hoping to win by dividing, opening talks with the DGA ahead of next spring’s contract expiration.
Also, it’s been reported that they hired some big PR guns, who are expert when it comes down to crisis management, and the word is that they are only trying to win/waste time, pretending to be working on new proposal when they aren’t, and intend to walk out while claiming all fault to the WGA, helped by a anti-WGA PR campaign.
Want to see how bad it looks ? Read this great report and instead of getting depressed, send pencils and more importantly stop watching the big networks when all they have to offer is crappy games, reality TV, or reruns.
And if you want to know more about where the AMPTP stands and what their offer is, here’s another hilarious video that explains it all :
