Thursday’s Numbers

NumbersAnother Thursday night went by, let’s have another look at the numbers. As usual we move directly to the 10.00 slot, since we don’t care that much about reruns. We can just notice that moving Big Brother on Thursday was a good move for CBS, taking to win of the night in total viewers from Fox, still first on the demo.

At 10.00 Flashpoint also continues to do good for The Eye, increasing its viewership by about 1 million viewers over last week with 7.6 million viewers, winning its slot without any problem. Flashpoint also improved a little on the demo, also winning the slot. Needless to say this sounds much better than what Swingtown used to do… which might be why it’s fair to say the later doesn’t have a future on the network.

Mad Men is up 100% !

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | July 29, 2008

NumbersThey all keep telling everyone who wants to hear it that Mad Men is absolutely brilliant, it’s loved by the critic, won many Critics Awards, received an awful lot of Emmy nominations, many of which will surely transform into actual awards, so it’s only normal that it got people curious.

And that they were, for the second season premiere of AMC drama, followed by close to 2 million viewers on Sunday night. That’s only twice more than the first season did, as it averaged around 915 000 viewers each week. Among 25-54 only, this new episode was followed by 996 000 viewers, where the series premiere “only” had 731 000 of them watching.

The real question will be to see how many of those new viewers will stick around for weeks to come, but one thing for sure is that all the attention praises awards the show received lately surely boosted AMC, and one can expect this to continue when the show will take home a few Emmys soon…

Thursday’s Numbers

NumbersLast night was the first Thursday to see Flashpoint in place of Swingtown, and there’s no question if was a great move for CBS. Sure Fox still won the night, but that’s because they have their games while other networks have, well, reruns.

Moving on to 10.00, where last week Swingtown had 5.3 million viewers and a 1.6 on the demo. newly relocated Flashpoint performed much better, winning the slot with 6.7 million viewers and a 1.7 on the demo. Not only is that better, but Swingtown had a lead-in with 8.8 million viewers whereas this week’s rerun of CSI was only followed by 7.4 million viewers.

Good start for Psych !

NumbersLast Friday was the season premiere for two USA summer hits : Monk, and Psych. It it was all pretty good, since at 9.00 Monk simply had its second-bast season premiere to date with 5.6 million viewers, after season 4 (6.4 million).

One hour later things stayed on the same level, as Psych held on to 86% of its lead-in, averaging 4.9 million viewers - 600 000 more viewers than last season’s premiere.

In the key demo (adults 18-49), Monk and Psych averaged about 2 million viewers, with the latter pulling in about 47 000 more viewers in the demo than its lead-in. Added to the great performances of new series In Plain Sight, needless to say USA is having a great summer so far!

Burn Notice is hot

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | July 14, 2008

NumbersWe’ve already talked about the numbers for Thursday night, but not on cable. But the fact and the matter is, a cable network series did pretty well on the beloved 18-49 demo !

USA’s summer-hit Burn Notice was back for a second season, and its premiere episode averaged a 1.8 rating on the demo, and 5.4 million viewers. That’s a 35% gain in viewers (20% in the demo) compared to the series premiere last summer.

Not only that, but the show was right below ABC’s Hopkins in viewers (5.5 million), beating both NBC’s Last Comic Standing and CBS’ Swingtown ! And on the demo, Burn Notice was also on the second spot, this time behind only Last Comic Standing (2.2), beating again ABC and CBS.

Burn Notice scored a 2.2 on the 25-54, the second best score for a scripted cable series telecast in 2008, behind only the winter finale of another USA series, Monk, back in February (2.5)

Friday’s Numbers

NumbersOkay, quick look at the numbers for Friday, since CBS had the series premiere of Flashpoint - still sitting on my DVR.

Did you watch it ? Was it good ? As I said I still don’t, but it was good for CBS - winner of the night both in viewers and on the demo, and that’s clearly thanks to the Flashpoint. The show didn’t just win its slot, but was the most-watched program (in viewers as well as on the demo) of the night, with 8.1 million viewers and 1.9 on the demo.

Clear winner, growing from its lead-in, performing better than anything else on TV that night, so far it’s a pretty good start for the show. It should also be noted that it improved (by ~200 000 viewers) between its first and last half-hour, which is never a bad sign. Of course we’ll have to see how things do next Friday, for the second episode.

Thursday’s Numbers

NumbersRight, so Thursday there was actually something on, like a new Swingtown on CBS, and while no fight with NBC, who didn’t had a new Fear Itself, you might still be interested in knowing how things went down.

As usual I’ll skip over to 10.00 cause before that it’s all reruns or games and likes. So at 10.00 Swingtown actually did a little better, gaining 700 000 viewers since last week and improving on the demo as well. Of course, that doesn’t really mean it’s all good, since there were more people watching TV this Thursday, and quite more on CBS, moving from the second spot last week with 5.9 M to the first spot, most-watched network on Thursday averaging 8.2 million viewers.

Thursday’s Numbers

NumbersAlright, so I kinda forgot about the numbers of Thursday - oops, sorry! - but they’re out and there’s stuff to talk about. As usual, we’re skipping the whole first part of the night, on to what was happening at 10.00, including the always “fight” between CBS’ Swingtown and NBC’s Fear Itself.

Ever since their series premiere, the numbers have been bigger for Swingtown, usually called winner for the night while Fear Itself got the looser title. And I’ve also always had a somewhat different interpretation, feeling that Fear Itself was actually doing “better”, starting with the fact that it had managed to reduce its loss of viewers week after week and get stable on the demo, whereas Swingtown kept loosing and loosing viewers endlessly.

And this week it shows so even more clearly, as Fear Itself was the winner, gaining viewers since one week ago, while CBS drama kept loosing more and more viewers.

Thursday’s Numbers

NumbersYes, after every Thursday we have our traditional look at the night numbers. As usual I won’t mention anything before 10.00, cause it’s not really worth caring (you’ll look at the numbers below if you’re interested).

So, nothing really new at 10.00, except that ABC had the new Hopkins instead of a rerun of Grey’s Anatomy, so they went from last to first on the slot, no less! With 5.8 million viewers, Hopkins won the slot in total viewers, though it got beaten on the demo by Swingtown (1.9 vs 1.6) It’s also worth noting that while again loosing viewers from its lead-in (1.5 million of them), Swingtown still grew on the demo from a 1.7 to a 1.9

Thursday’s Numbers

NumbersAnother Thursday night, so let’s have a look at the numbers again. And once more there’s no real interest in finding out which of all the reruns performed best (hint: it’s CSI), no what we care about are the two new series form Thursday night, which - thanks to smart network execs - have been put the same day at the same time.

Here it goes : Swingtown was down 1.2 million viewers since last week, yet managed to win its slot with 6.1 million viewers and 2.1 on the demo. Fear Itself did loose some viewers as well (200 000 of them) and was second, with 4.7 million viewers and a 1.5 on the demo.

And again, the way I look at this makes Swingtown a looser, and Fear Itself just not performing too good…
