30 Rock: Gavin Volure

30 Rock(S03E04) As as become the rule with 30 Rock this season, every week is a new episode, and every episode guest stars some famous celebrity. I have always said that 30 Rock was probably (one of) the best shows when it came down to using guests and making the most of it, using them as integral part of the show, not something that felt forced or out of place.

Still, I’ve had my worries about this constant use of guests this season, and quite frankly during last week’s episode with Jennifer Aniston’s appearance, I could see why. This week was Steve Martin’s turn, and I am happy to say he was probably one of the best guests we got to see this season so far. A terrific performance and lots of great lines to throw at us all the time, great stuff.

The Office: Frame Toby

The Office(S05E08) We should talk about what The Office is. Much like How I Met Your Mother, this is a great show that has been delivering so much awesome and hilarious episodes with such quality for many years now, that I think most of us have quite high expectations every week, and also we’re not willing to accept from those shows things we would find just fine in other sitcoms.

Because while they’re sitcoms, that is the category they fall under, neither of them are really just that. For once reason or another, they’re outgrow their initial status of “just a sitcom” to become something else, something more, something where having sitcom-esque situations or cartoonish characters isn’t acceptable. And while it might be where the episode went, a little, I have to say I loved it.

Life: Badge Bunny

Life(S02E09) I think that I might be a bit obsessed with this show, or the way it changed this new season, and maybe because of it I fail to enjoy it the way I should. But I can’t help myself, and I also happened to think I’m totally right. So we’ll talk about it some more, because while this was a good episode, a really good one, I can’t help but feel that it also couldn’t have been one episode of last season.

It’s the same show, with the same characters and everything, and yet there seems to be something missing this season, like it was the result of a decision - for which I blame NBC - to make the show more “normal”, less different, less unique. We all know that last season, this show was like nothing else on TV, just like Charlie Crews was like no one else. All in a good way.

Criminal Minds: Masterpiece

Criminal Minds(S04E08) We all know Reid is special, he is not like the rest of us, he is a little genius living in his own world. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing, it really isn’t. It has served him well over the years, and surely did too for the show. But there’s no question that his mind is of superior intelligence, he does think like every body else, and that’s why he can think of things and see things where we can’t.

That’s why he’s so good at playing chess, because he’s able to see what his opponent will do before he even knows it, because he can always be a couple of moves (if not more) ahead of everyone. That’s the thing with brilliant minds, whether they’re good or evil.

Pushing Daisies: Oh Oh Oh… It’s Magic

Pushing Daisies(S02E06) Finally Pushing Daisies was back, and I sure hope you were watching. That for two reasons. One, because ABC will be looking at the ratings of this episode to make a final decision about the show’s fate, and two, because - as so brilliantly illustrated in this wonderful episode - the show does deserve to stay on television.

It doesn’t look like anything else and comes with its very own world, a world where people are often brought back to life, if only for a minute, a delightful world made of pies that, inevitably, make you feel better inside — and not because someone used drugs while baking them. There’s heart in this sweet little show, and despite dealing with death and living dead individuals all the time, it couldn’t be happier or funnier.

This show is, indeed, magic, and magic and murders make a perfect recipe for Pushing Daisies.

South Park: The Ungroundable

South Park(S12E14) Well, this sucks. We’re not even in December, but already this was the last episode of South Park we’ll get in a while, not because the show goes on a break but because this was the season finale. Now we have to wait for months before next season, which should premiere sometime in April or May 2009. In the mean time, when looking back at this season, we’ll have plenty of stuff to laugh about.

It was a pretty good season, sometimes episodes weren’t that good but we’ve also had some awesome ones. While it’s possible that, this being the season finale, I was really expecting/hoping for a really great episode, I have to say I was disappointed this week. This episode wasn’t that bad, but it really was not great per se.

Privileged: All About Overcompensating

Privileged(S01E08) Before we get into this episode, let me just remind you that while this episode didn’t do too well in the ratings, The CW have faith that the show has potential to grow, and the next couple of episodes will probably play a big role in the decision making process. We won’t have no new episode next week, but Privileged will then be back for two consecutive weeks on a special Monday airing.

On both December 1st and 8th the show will air Mondays at 9.00 after the popular (thought slightly declining in recent weeks) Gossip Girl. Hopefully this will lead to a boost in ratings, and after ordering five additional episodes the net will finally give the show the full season pick-up it rightfully deserves.

Eli Stone: The Humanitarian

Eli Stone(S02E05) Things have been pretty unusual for Eli and the rest of the people who didn’t fall on to the dark side, with the split of companies and all. So far this season, Eli didn’t really get a chance to work a “real” case and do so with the little help from above, since they clearly leave no doubt now that, at the very least in Eli’s mind, his visions are a direct message from God.

Eli has been having visions and he’s been in court, even though he was not always allowed to, but it was to help Jordan and ensure their new company would have a future. Now that this is done and everyone picked a side, we can slowly move into a new daily routine. Except that, here, it’s never that easy, and you don’t ever get such a thing.

Fringe: The Equation

Fringe(S01E08) I’m not entirely sure how I feel about this show, as I explained last week. And as a matter of fact I’m even not sure how I felt about this episode, I don’t know if it was a really good one or not. I’ve said many times that this show failed, so far, to create real excitement within each episode, that it always relied on the same old formula to construct all episodes, which does leave a big mystery part out of the equation, as well as having this tendency to fall back on serialized plots to try to create a sense of excitement.

And at first look, this episode wasn’t different than the rest. It started like any other episode of Fringe and it didn’t seem to be going any place new, but then something happen. Something that we hadn’t seen so far, and that - confused as I am about the show - I couldn’t really tell if it was a great thing or not, and I’m still not quite sure how I feel about it, though I might lean towards great.

House: Emancipation

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | November 19, 2008

House(S05E08) After being MIA for a little while, last week we were reminded of Cameron existence as she was very much involved in the case, and pretty much felt like she was back on the team, working with House again. What this really showed was that for over a year now, House has been working with new people – well, except for Foreman who somehow got stuck back with House — leaving the original one, Chase and Cameron, with close to nothing to do.

This has always been an issue for me, because as much as I loved the original team, it just felt wrong to knew they were still around, and sometime see one walking by, but without them having much to do. House has moved on, and i really wish the writers would either find a way to integrate them back into the show, or let them go as well, so we can move on too.
