Writers Strike Seen By Jon Stewart

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | November 3, 2007

I have already talked about the strike, and what it was about. Well, here’s an even shorter sumup of the whole thing, what writers want and what the networks reply, and how it all comes to. In a pure Daily Show tradition, this is right on & dead funny.

By the way, the strike is here, and obviously all those comedy talk shows who rely on their writers for their content every day, based on daily news & events and that, as such, can’ be written in advance, well all those shows we go into repeats starting Monday : Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, Daily Show with Jon Stewart, The Colbert Report, as well as SNL.

Writers Guild of America going on strike as early as Monday !

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | November 2, 2007

It seems inevitable now that the Writers Guild of America (WGA) is going on strike as early as Monday. More info on the whole thing and how it will affect us, TV viewers, will keep flooding in over the next few days, but it’s apparently going to happen.

I’ve already mentioned how a few shows will be affected by such a strike, but it also depends on how long it will last. Hopefully not too long.

Since the strike is likely to occur, here’s a little recap as to why writers are going there, what are they asking, and why they should get it.

What the Fox ?? - A Bionic failure - And Reaper’s way

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | October 25, 2007

- Really, does anyone who watched one episode of Fox’s “sitcom” Back To You liked it ? Really?!! It is so unfunny and those recorded laughs are so annoying I couldn’t even stay on for the full episode, and I never went back there again. Ever.

Yet, in their all mighty silliness, or is it stupidity, Fox picked it up for a full season. Even worst, they ordered not 9 but 11 more episodes, getting the season to 24 episodes !! WTF?

- In other news, Bionic Woman hit a new low with only 7.78 million viewers last night, while it premiered not so long ago at 13.59 million viewers. Yeah, that’s pretty bad, that’s almost a 43% drop bad, yet it’s not as bad as the show actually is. I still haven’t got a chance to see that episode, but I know it was bad already. This had to be the first NBC new series to go.
And Journeyman might be next in line…

- In the mean time, here’s some good news : apparently The CW has ordered three more scripts of Reaper! Sure, there’s the whole strike thing, but this sounds good still, although I wish they would pick up the full season order, the show is worth it I think.

Viva Laughlin is gone! What is Viva Laughlin?

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | October 22, 2007

Yaay! Stand up, clap your hands, do a little dance and shake your ass : Viva Laughlin has just been canceled after only two episodes!

I don’t know why everyone is talking about it, I mean I’m pretty sure no one heard of that show before, but there you go. And no, it wasn’t on Fox, it was CBS. Fox would have never let the second episode aired, silly!

What if writers go on strike ?

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | October 20, 2007

As you probably heard for a while now, there is a major risk that writers will go on strike starting as soon a November first if writers and producers do not come to an agreement on a new contract by the end of the month. As the risk grows every day, what could it mean for us viewers ?

Well, expect a lot more of reruns and reality shows.

But really, how about how favorite TV series ? Well… if depends. For example, while Family Guy fans are fine, because animated series such as this one or The Simpsons are completed up to a year in advance, and therefore are unaffected by any strike regardless of its length (well, for this season at least), fans of shows like 24 or Lost might very well be screwed!

The Emmy - Highlights

The Emmy are now over, I already listed and commented about the winners, now let’s have a few comments about the ceremony itself. First off, I just want to say Seacrest turned out to be not as bad as expected I think. Good. Although that costume thing, just lame.

Let’s have a moment for the end of summer TV

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | September 17, 2007

Summer television is now pretty much over, as summer shows are off and (new) shows returns, so I think we should all take a moment to celebrate summer television.

Because this summer, while the big networks might have been boring, we might thank God for cable. We had plenty of reasons to enjoy TV with great shows, funny, thrilling, great acting and high writing quality.

While I personally did not get into Mad Men that much, plenty are crazy about the show. Of course, Psych was a fresh comedy that made me laugh all the way, South Park was to die for as always, Weeds is back and despite some shitty mistakes (army plot), it’s still an wonderful show.

Not to forget the awesome Damages, which deserves to get some Emmy next year, shows I don’t watch as The Closer, Big Love, and so much more. Of course, not to forget The 4400, of which I’ll see the finale very soon!

Usually summer TV might be a little dead, but Showtime, FX, USA, HBO and all those cable networks did a great job, making watching TV worthwhile even during summer, and it was awesome.

So a big thanks to everyone involved, and I’ll be more than happy to see next again next summer!

Emmy presenters : it’s all about the hair baby!

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | September 5, 2007

The list of Emmy presenters for the upcoming ceremony incudes names such as almost host Hugh Laurie of HouseBarney Stinson Neil Patrick Harris of How I Met Your Mother, Mary-Louise Parker of Weeds, Glenn Close of Damages, Mark Harmon of NCIS, Eva Longoria of Desperate Housewives, Anthony Anderson of Fox’s upcoming K-Ville, William Shatner of Boston Legal, Vanessa Williams of Ugly Betty or Mandy Patinkin Joe Mantegna of Criminal Minds.

Ali LarterBut the one you should really be looking for, is Ali Larter of Heroes.  Why? Well because she’ll do her hair on her own, without the help of a dozen of stylist, some chemists, magic potion and L’Oreal products. Instead the blonde actress has decided to “go real”, with the help of Dove Hair Care who claims that her approach is “an effort to inspire women to start loving the hair they have (rather than compare it to images of hairstyles that are not achievable every day)“.

How awesome does that sound? Yeah.. I know. Right!? You want to know more don’t you?

I bet you can’t wait for September 16th, 8pm, when the show will air on Fox. Right? Right?

iTunes to cease to exists soon?

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | September 5, 2007

Just a few days ago NBC announced their content would not be available on iTunes, and now the Wall Street Journal is reporting that Sony plans to launch a video download service to compete with iTunes.

And Sony might be better suited for the job that NBC an their hulu.com is, seeing how Sony - like Apple - has both hardware, with the PlayStation and Bravia television sets, and the content with, you know, Sony Pictures movies and TV shows. That’s not little.

But of course to succeed Sony will need help from others, they’ll have to sign distribution deals with other TV and movie producers. In the mean time, Apple is already there and one can buy content from many different sources, using iTunes. Not to mention that their iPhones are selling like crazy, as reports indicate that 1.8 percent of all phones sold in the United States during the month of July were Apple’s, which is the highest of any smartphone and equal to the sales of the LG Chocolate, the leading feature phone.

In the mean time, another tackle at iTunes made by NBC as they announced that they now plan to sell their content through Amazon Unbox. For sure this will be a boost for Amazon’s digital download store. After ditching Apple and their iTunes, they choose to go work with Amazon and their Unbox, because Amazon will let them adjust prices as they feel appropriate.

And, Amazon has a stronger DRM system. Read, it’s harder to use what you paid for the way you want to.

NBC creates friction and scorn millions of iPhones users

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | September 4, 2007

Apparently not everyone likes the pricing that are going on on the iTunes platform. Many rich execs in the media industry seems very frustrated with what they consider to be low pricing (Songs are sold for 99 cents, TV shows for $1.99 and movies for $9.99). Read, too low. Because it can never be expensive enough, when it’s not them paying.

And so NBC decided to stop selling their shows to iTunes, claiming that they wanted more security against piracy “since it is estimated that the typical iPod contains a significant amount of illegally downloaded material“, as well as “flexibility in wholesale pricing“.

Ok so everyone who has a iPod raise your hand. Now the cops can arrest you and send you to jail. Because if you have an iPod, is it estimated that you should have a “significant amount” of illegal material on it. How long before buying an iPod is consider act of terrorism and consumers are sent to Guantanamo? I wonder.
