Chuck: Chuck Versus The Broken Heart

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | March 31, 2009

Chuck(S02E18) After some development in the ongoing plot in recent weeks with some pretty good episodes, this episode managed to be at the same time both enjoyable and yet disappointing. It was enjoyable because the show has been around for some time now, and they clearly now how to use all those characters and put them in situations which will, one way or another, end up being funny - if not for them, at least for us.

Yet it was also disappointing at the same time, for a few reasons. This first one might be that, save for the very last scene and the cliffhanger they ended the episode with, which promise interesting development in the future while not really delivering any presently, the plot didn’t really move this time. It looked like there might be changes, but in a good TV fashion it all got resolved by the end of the episode, with everything back to normal.

Castle: Hell Hath No Fury

Castle(S01E04) Last week I said how disappointed I was with this show, as the episode was pretty bad, let’s be honest. But this week things got better, much better, and that was exactly how you do it, a fun episode of Castle! I’m not gonna try and pretend this was the best episode possible (though it might have been the best one yet, for sure) nor will I claim it wasn’t flawed, but it was fun.

This isn’t a cop drama, this isn’t about the case of the week nor solving a crime, don’t be fooled. This is about Castle and Beckett, and the two of them working together. And that is what this show outta be about. If I have to choice between an episode with a very average and quite predictable case, but lots of fun between our two leads, or an episode with a strong and surprising case, but no jokes and just them running an investigation, guess which I pick?

Gossip Girl: Remains Of The J

Gossip Girl(S02E20) In the previous weeks I had been quite disappointed with this show, and so I am happy to say that this episode was – finally – better. I wouldn’t say it was as good as the show once was, and quite frankly the more it goes the more I wonder if a third season will do it any good, but at least this episode was better and that is a good thing.

Different things took place this week, as the once referred to as Little J was turning 16 (yes, she was only 15 during her rebellious weeks living in the streets and whatnot) and that is, usually, a very big deal. Of course, as is always the case in the Upper East Side, things didn’t exactly go as planned and it ended up badly. Where would be the fun otherwise?

House: Locked In

House(S05E19) It’s been five years, that’s a long time and a lot of episodes, and understandably a show that far in might not be as fresh as when it started. For a moment there, when House fired (or lost) his entire team, and then embarked on a long quest to find worthy replacement, it got fresh again. It allowed the writers to shake things up a bit and use new blood.

But now that’s all past, and they managed to turn some of the doctors of House current team very annoying (yes I’m thinking of her). But that doesn’t mean it can’t be fresh again, when pulling out in idea as did this episode for instance. Of course, it’s not new, I’m sure there are way more shows than I could think of that have actually used the same way of telling a story before.

24: 11.00pm – 12.00am

24(S07E16) I know this is the whole concept of the show, one day, 24 hours, 24 episodes, but sometimes it feels like it might be a bit too much, because there are clearly hours during which not a lot takes place. This hour for instance, was not very big in development and only what we knew would happen did happen, not moving the plot forward more than the least it had to.

It’s always very frustrating, even more so when the end of the season is coming up rapidly. There were tow major “twists” featured this week, one of them worked on me as I was sure it wouldn’t happen, while the other one couldn’t have been more predictable and nothing else than an attempt to waste time, because they need one hour or two to pass before things get exiting again…

How I Met Your Mother: Murtaugh

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | March 31, 2009

How I Met Your Mother(S04E19) We all know how unique this little sitcom can be, so much that it doesn’t even feel right to put it under that general term (General Term!) that is ’sitcom.’ but it is one, and in the past many have complained – yours truly included – that the show could resort to classic/cliché sitcom-esque plots or jokes that were beneath him and often resulted in less than average episode.

This week, what we had was still somewhat of the same, it didn’t had any of those HIMYM-special ways of telling a story, but used some classic sitcom-esque plot to make this episode. Yet, it worked. It might be because it was more inspired than before, it might be because every character got a chance to shine exactly the way you expect him/her to, it might be because Barney was at the center of it (though in the past that didn’t prevent such episodes from failing), or it might simply be because it was funny.

The Big Bang Theory: The Dead Hooker Juxtaposition

The Big Bang Theory(S02E19) It’s a known fact Sheldon always steals the show, and that he – and Penny – (usually) make for the funniest bits of any given episode. That’s why it’s not uncommon to see episode focus more on them, or Sheldon, because this is where the best laughs are coming from. If there has been episode in the past focusing on other characters, it’s often proven not to be as successful.

This week was one of those episode that didn’t focus on Sheldon or Penny, at least not directly, and yet it managed to be extremely funny all the while giving something nice things to do to about anyone in the cast. Pretty great episode on that end, and very funny, of course. On a side note though, and as was feared, the whole Penny Blossom thing has just been dropped.

Breaking Bad: Down

AddThis Social Bookmark ButtonBy fred | March 30, 2009

Breaking Bad(S02E04) This show is about drugs, and the effect it can have on one’s life. But instead of looking at it from the usual consumer side, we’re here witnessing the lives of a chemistry teacher and his once student who are now trying to cook and sell meth, and how that will most likely end up destroying their lives completely. After all they went through, having to kill some people and deal with some pretty crazy ones who got shot by DEA agents, you might have thought for a moment there that they’d realize how messed up this was, how awful it could get and that they’d use the opportunity of bring “free” to just quit.

But Walter wasn’t really there, as far as he’s concerned, nothing had changed . Not the reasons he wanted to get in this business in the first place : he’s still dying, and he still needs a lot of money for his family to be taken care of. But if that didn’t change, everything else actually has change and keeps changing, changing as in falling apart, really. (And it’s a delight to witness it, such great television!)
