So now that both Jay Leno and Conan O’Brien have announced their intention to go back in the air, the Writers Guilds of America is reminding everyone, including the two hosts, and members of the WGA, of the pre-approved “Strike Rules pertaining to Comedy/Variety” sent to all comedy writers before the strike.
This, to make sure that, while writers themselves and able to come up with material on their own, they should not. The writer in them is still striking, and they are only returning on the air as hosts, to allow non-writing staff to work. A WGA spokesperson said that “these are the rules we expect all the hosts to adhere to if they go back on the air without their writers, who will still be on strike“.

Only Fox had new episodes on Sunday night, and they did do pretty well. CBS did won the night with their full night of Survivor, going almost as high as 16 million viewers at 9.00 and coming first both at 8.00 and 9.00, but Fox came first on the 18-49 demo.
The Simpsons end the year pretty well, with over 10 million viewers (about 1.1 million more than the last one) and coming first on the 18-49 demo on their timeslot (4.8) - some pretty good results while facing CBS’ Survivor. American Dad did pretty well as well, ending the year with over 7 million viewers.

There were rumors for a few days now that some late night shows might be coming back on the air starting next year, whether the strike was resolved by then or not. With Monday came official announcements confirming that NBC’s two main late night shows will indeed be back on the air, starting January 2nd.
As I discussed earlier, rumors were out all weekend that this could happen, without writers approval or support. This was obviously a tough decision to make for both Leno & O’Brien, who - after Leno got a little pressured to do so as well - have both supported the writers ever since the strike started, as well as paid out of their own pockets non-writing staff on their shows.

There’s been quite some development lately, and many things are still being worked on at this very moment. Nothing is certain yet, no official and definitive announcement have been made, so I will address the latest news.
As you probably know, negotiations between WGA and AMPTP are ended once again, and the AMPTP has entered a new campaign aiming at blaming the WGA for the failure. It seems that they’re objective might also be to get the strike to last a little longer, because they’re greedy assholes some of the big media companies are claiming that the strike will not really have an impact (read: on their gigantic profit).

The Golden Globes nominations are out, and there’s now some talk about whether or not nominees will actually show up. If the writers decides to go picketing, will they cross picket lines or will they refuse to show up ?
Nothing is known for certain now, writers could go picketing to hurt the show, or let it go to provide a national window for their supporters to express their feeling and let a wider audience know what’s going on.
Still, a few people have already expressed their feelings, like Grey’s Anatomy star Katherine Heigl who told Entertainment Tonight : “I’m not crossing the picket line unless I’m contractually obliged to do so. And I’m not with the Golden Globes.”
Not everyone is there, and 30 Rock writer Tina Fey is ready to go. “I’m very excited and grateful to the Hollywood Foreign Press. It’s a happy piece of news in this weird season” Fey said in a statement to Usmagazine.com
But my personal favorite words came from House brilliant actor Hugh Laurie : “I have to emphasize how much I owe to David Shore and all the writers on House. Without them, I wouldn’t even know how to finish this sentence without… you know…”

Recently ABC revealed their schedule, and the eight episodes of Lost that have been completed will air on a new timeslot, originally home of another hit-drama of the Alphabet : Grey’s Anatomy.
Striking producers and head writers Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof have commented this decision in a recent interview with LA Times.

So ABC had a hard time coming up with their schedule for 2008, adjusting it with the strike and the fact that, unlike others, their shows don’t usually do well in rerun. Finally they revealed their schedule, so let’s have a quick look at the most important things :
- Of course the main thing is Lost, coming back on a new timeslot : Thursday, January 31st at 9.00 I’ve already talked about this, so let’s move on.
- After Lost will premiere Eli Stone. Many see this as a vote of confidence for Eli Stone, to be put after the hit that Lost is. It may be, but I would not be so sure it’s such a great thing. I mean, let’s face it : it’s a dead slot. After you’ve watched a new episode of Lost, you either turn off your TV to think and/or talk about what just happened, or you just you watched he episode again.
- Cashmere Mafia premieres Thursday, January 3rd and then moves to its regular slot Wednesday, January 9th
- According To Jim, Just For Laughs, Supernanny and Wife Swap returns. New seasons of Dancing With The Stars and The Bachelor begins on March 17th.

Numbers for Friday night were a bit slower than usual to be revealed, sorry about that, but here they are! And the conclusion is no surprise, new scripted content is good. And it was very good for CBS on Friday night, winner of the night on both total viewers and on the 18-49. Not only that but they won each and every slot too.
Meanwhile, both ABC struggled and Fox fell down to the very last place both on viewers and the 18-49 demo, and The CW did pretty good with their usually strong Friday Night Smackdown!
At 8.00 Ghost Whisperer and Love’s cleavage came first with 9.8 million viewers and 2.6 on the 18-49 demo. Almost 5 million viewers watched It’s A Wonderful Life on NBC, coming second. The repeat of Don’t Forget The Lyrics on Fox was next was 4.6 million viewers, closely followed the The CW and 4.5 million viewers in front of their Friday Night Smackdown!
