Golden Globes Nominations

By fred | December 13, 2007

Golden GlobesOkay, so I just finished writing my review of Pushing Daisies, I still have yet to watch Criminal Minds, but I have to try to read what else is going on in the world of TV, right ? Which ain’t easy either because for some weird reasons, I can’t have any pages of any websites to load in less than 15 seconds for the fastest ones like Google, which is a real PITA.

Anyways, the nominations for the 65th Golden Globe Awards have been announced, but right before we go into that : will the ceremony even air ? I mean sure, NBC is supposed to air it on January 13, 2008. But shall I remind you that there’s a strike going on ? Of course not. But this little fact might have big consequences regarding the awardsn because many people would not actually show up to get their awards, not just writers but producers and showrunners (but often are writers as well) as well as actors, given how they all supports the writers and have been seen outside on the picket line too.

So should writers go picket there, all nominees, friends and family could refuse to cross the picket line. Which would have NBC facing a tough choice : will there be a ceremony to broadcast, or not. There could also be another question here, should writers decide not to picket and “let” every one show up, they could all use the exposure to say each and every time how they support the writers and their strike, explain what’s going on to a wider audience and bash the AMPTP, studios, and NBC, for hours, on national television.

So, we have a list of nominations, likely there will be winners, but will we have a ceremony ?

Either way, let’s look into the nominations. There’s some good, and some bad. Cable series from Showtime or FX are being recognized, and that’s much deserved (most of the time), still quite a few shows are missing. I don’t see Lost and their overall awesome third season anywhere, not the show, not Elizabeth Mitchell, Michael Emerson, Matthew Fox or Terry O’Quinn. Really ?

I once again don’t see the great and hilarious How I Met Your Mother, I also do not see 24 or Heroes, but that’s only fair.

As usual, I’ll put my votes in bold, along with some comments if/when I feel like adding something.

Best Drama

- House
- Mad Men
- Big Love
- Grey’s Anatomy
- The Tudors
- Damages

Kudos to Damages, which totally deserves its nominations. What a fantastic (first) season that was, from the very first episode all the way to the finale. I loved that show, and I’d really happy to know it should come back for two more years. Still, I vote House. Yes, it’s been around for a few years already, but while staying the same this season writers have been able to somehow reinvent the show, and the season has been nothing but fantastic this year.

Still my most favorite series, and probably so far the best season of all. There is still a couple of things that don’t fit there, like why the Hell is still Grey’s Anatomy nominated, expect for good ratings maybe ?

Also, I would have loved to see Life up there, because this series has been no less than spectacular already and kept improving week after week. As far as I’m concerned, this is by far the best new series of this season, and my second most favorite series. I love it so much that had it been nominated, I might even have voted for Life instead of House, because it’s that great, really.

Best Comedy

- 30 Rock
 -Californication
 -Entourage
 -Pushing Daisies
- Extras

Ok, now what the fuck is this ?? First, Pushing Daisies !? Don’t get me wrong, I love the show, but that’s not the right category for it. It can’t go against half-hour sitcoms, it simply isn’t the same, at all. In fact, they need a new category for shows like Pushing Daisies, Chuck, or even Reaper (which might be even more turned on the comedy aspect than the aforementioned ones). They need one category for “sitcoms” (half-hour), and another one for “comedies” (hour).

Then, Californication ?? WTF! Seriously, Showtime is great and all, but except for the pilot that show sucked, it got worse and worse each time only to end with an incredibly lame finale. Anyone voting for this show should be shot in the head.

And, again, where’s the love for How I Met Your Mother ?
