Chuck: Chuck Versus the Wookiee

Chuck(S01E04) I never liked this new series. Many people see the way they redo classic moves from James Bond’s and other spy movies as “parody”, or tribute, or something like that. Apparently, seeing a stupid cliché still done the same way, as lame and seriously done as always, suddenly becomes a great, cool, funny even, thing as soon as it’s done on Chuck.

I never got into that. Because there are no parodic elements anywhere on the show, because they do it all taking themselves quite seriously. I never see any sign of self-depreciation or second degree or anything close. I simply don’t see it.

Heroes: The Kindness of Strangers

Heroes(S02E04) Ok, I finally could watch the latest episode of Heroes, so I did. I usually don’t really feel like spoiling things too soon, but I’ve had this theory and I’ve seen it formulated by others as well pretty much as soon as the first season’s finale ended, and it feels just right.

Back at the beginning, Heroes was a promising new series. It was, and it had potential. Along the way they probably realized that a large potion of their audience if not most of it was made of teenagers. From that point on, instead of trying to write good television and challenge viewers’ expectations, as they do on other series, they simply decided to go for their audience, please them with cheesy lame cliché stories (teenagers probably don’t realize how lame it really is, maybe they never even seen those before!) and meet all their expectations.

They don’t challenge you, they (try to) make you feel smart by using incredibly lame and/or predictable plots. They don’t bother with writing good scripts, and they really think their viewers are as dumb as fuck.

As showed by the season one finale, or this second season.

Reaper: Magic

Reaper(S01E04) Sometimes I just can’t understand why a good show doesn’t meet success, or why a bad one does. I haven’t watched this week’s episodes of both Heroes or Chuck, but I am pretty sure it won’t be good, because (this season) neither of them have been able to deliver one single episode that was actually worth watching, really.
Yet, I’m sure both of those are quite popular and still doing pretty good. Go figure.

On the other hand, here we have a new series that may not get as much press as others, after all it’s “only” on The CW, but it does well and there’s a reason for it : it really is a good show. Seeing how there was no House this week, I sure hope some who may have not tried it yet did tune in this time, so that they can start watching/recording from now on.

Journeyman: The Year of the Rabbit

Journeyman(S01E04) Despite my liking of this new series, last week I was forced to say that I was almost “disappointed” by it. I don’t really want to use the term of disappointment because it’s a bit too strong, but I had my list of complaints with the episode and the show, and what I didn’t like.

This doesn’t mean it was bad or that I didn’t enjoy watching it, nor that I would not keep tuning in, but I was anxious to see whether or not it was only a one-time deal, or a more general road on which the show was moving on. In other words, was it only a mistake we could forgot about, or a more global concern about the whole series in itself.

Samantha Who?: Pilot

Samantha Who?(S01E01) Well, I wasn’t really waiting for this one, I didn’t even care to read about it that much. I knew it was the newt sitcom that would reintroduced Christina Applegate to comedy on TV. I also knew it was about her character, who as she suffered from amnesia was finding out she used to be a bad person, one she would hate (to be) and so she was gonna change, or willing to, or something like this.

And that’s about it. To be honest, I didn’t really believe it would be funny. They had a big name, lots of promo, a very strong lead-in, and I didn’t expect anything else. I still watched that pilot, only to find out that…

How I Met Your Mother: Little Boys

How I Met Your Mother(S03E04) I was really waiting for this episode, because as I’ve said last time I really love the show, but I thought this season wasn’t as good as the previous ones were. It doesn’t mean that it was bad or that I did not laugh while watching, but it didn’t had the same amount and quality of funny, no.

And of all, last week was the most disappointing episode of the three this season, so I was really anxious to find out if it was still going down that line, and if finally they had their mojo back!

I just watched it, and I don’t know how you felt but…

Weekly DVR Cleaning: Reaper, Dirty Sexy Money, My Name Is Earl, Carpoolers

ReaperWith all the series on the air right now, it really doesn’t take much to get really behind on schedule! Not that I’m complaining, of course not, but I’ll admit that it’s not easy to watch everything in time week after week. So yeah, even this DVR cleaning comes in late, and to be honest there’s still a couple of things I haven’t watched, like Criminal Minds amongst others.

Anyhow, here we go with Reaper, Dirty Sexy Money, My Name Is Earl and Carpoolers.

Supernatural: The Kids Are Alright

Supernatural(S03E02) Another episode, another girl introduced to the boys, and us viewers. This time we had both girls, although as promised they never shared any screen time or plots, and it’s very clear to it is to each brother his girl.

But that’s not all this episode had to offer, it was filled with a lot of things. Along with those two characters was a brand new plot, a new monster for our boys to fight. And let me spoil it for you, it was some Supernatural at his best!

30 Rock: Jack Gets In The Game

30 Rock(S02E02) Not all sitcoms of the NBC Thursday night have lost themselves. Sure, this one did not had his format changed and dragged for a second half hour. Regardless, 30 Rock was always a nice show providing a light, funny half-hour during which you could forget all about your day and simply enjoy its lovely craziness.

Luckily, nothing’s changed so far this season. Well, that’s not true, there’s been a few changes on the show, but the overall feeling about it is still as good as ever.

The Office: Launch Party

The Office(S04E03) Well well.. What to say, really, about this show. I am a big fan of The Office, it is a fantastic show, great cast and brilliant writing. It is hilarious and succeed to not fall into stupid sitcom cliché situations and plots, and its “mockumentary” touch and bits of realism mixed into it is always very well made. To be honest, I strongly believe that this one is better than the original British series.

Original was funny, but they made it hilarious. They’ve been able to turn good into great and make the American version of the show even better than the original was. This is probably the best, most funny sitcom on the air at this point, and I love it.

I really do, and that’s why watching those new hour-long episodes is so painful. As I said before, I wasn’t personally opposed to have twice as much of The Office every week, because I love it that much, but there was one condition for this to work fine : writers had not to break the rules and rhythm of the show.

But they did.
