Pushing Daisies: Pigeon

By fred | October 27, 2007

Pushing Daisies(S01E04) Don’t get me wrong, I do like this show very much. I think it is really well made and offers a nice hour of “entertainment”. That being said, and while it seems many people, critics and regular viewers, are absolutely in love with Pushing Daisies, I am not.

Recently the series got picked up by ABC and received its full season order, a news that I too see as a good news. (Now if only NBC could do the same for Life…) But when I heard that news, I also talked about the (not so) little things that started to worry me about the show.

Well, not so little they were! I’m actually finding myself not enjoying this lovely series as much as many others it seems, and as much as I used to, because of those “little things”.

And I will start with the most obvious one, I believe. The whole bit about Ned and Chuck being unable to touch each others, while in love with one another. This is obviously part of the tale part of the show, and I’m sure moments such as Chuck holding someone else’s hand while dreaming it was the one of the pie maker, was intended to be a sweet, romantic, heartbreaking moment.

And it is not that I’m insensitive to such things or that I couldn’t enjoy such thing, but because of writers previous decisions and what they bot did in previous episodes, I simply cannot enjoy such moments. In fact, it is starting to annoy me even!

The facts are these, we’ve seen that they could kiss, if only a very thing plastic wrap was in between the two of them. Because only an actual skin to skin contact would have Chuck to die again, and forever. But as long as something, as thin as it could be, was in between the two of them - she was safe.

With that fact established, and after all the imagination and creativity the pie maker showed when it comes to ways for his sweetheart and himself to come in contact withone another, I cannot see why he sometimes wears short sleeves while fully aware of the deadly consequences it could have, should he inadvertently came in contact with a dead pigeon, or his sweetheart Chuck.

He should always wear long sleeves, making sure such contact could not be made, and - pretexting fear of germs maybe - he should also wear very thin gloves, the kind of gloves surgeons wear before saving someone’s life, allowing him to ensure he would not took someone’s life, especially Chuck’s. Besides, with gloves covering his hands, the pie maker could then catch Chuck should she found herself falling down while in close proximity of her sweetheart.

Such proximity being more than likely, because the two of them always stand next to each others, pretty close, closer even. In the graveyard, Chuck even (almost) touched the pie maker as she went “no, wait!”, but it didn’t matter, because that time he was wearing long sleeves.

I would have probably find the whole plot with Ned unable to catch Chuck as she felt, and Chuck holding someone else’s hand while dreaming it was in act the one of the pie maker, perfectly fitting in the show and moments I could like, had it happened a couple of episodes ago. But now, I can not enjoy any of it because it only screams inconsistency to me.

Well, it’s not really that I don’t like Chuck, just that the whole deal with her & the pie maker not being able to touch each other is growing into a huge inconsistency mess… IMO.

Emerson is a realy good and funny character though, I wish we’d get to see more of him.
