Will Criminal Minds’ Gideon suffer from Patinkin’s actions ?

By fred | August 14, 2007

Jason Gideon (Mandy Patinkin)I think by now everyone heard of the drama that goes on with Criminal Minds and its star, Mandy Patinkin, who on the first day of work decided he wouldn’t be part of the show any more.

Whether it was personal issues or creative differences, the result is the same : he’s out and has been replaced even. And finding the right person for the job, one that would accept, wasn’t an easy task.

But now that it’s been done doesn’t mean everyone has forgotten the mess Patinkin created, or the quite “unpolite” way he’s done it. Actually, pretty much everyone working on the show still holds a big grudge over him, so much that it might even hurt the show….

As we already knew, Patinkin had agreed to return for one episode, giving the writers somewhat of an opportunity to wrap things up a little and at least explain why Gideon was suddenly gone and not to be seen anymore.

But Michael Ausiello reports that this appearance, which should air during the second episode of the season, on October 3rd, will consist of only one single scene, featuring no one else but Patinkin.

This isn’t the first time Patinkin pulls something like this, and just like before no one really knows why he did it. He didn’t warn anyone, there were no signs of anything wrong before, quite the contrary in fact, and then out of the blue he lets everyone down and puts them in trouble (remember that no less than the seven first episodes of the season were already written, with Gideon in obviously).

So quite understandably everyone is pissed at him, so much that they apparently refuse to work with him anymore, even for that one scene ! Some people including cast members had already expressed their dislike of Patinkin’s move, but it’s now moving to another level.

Let’s just hope the writers won’t be so pissed, or will be able to not let this affect their work too much. Because in the end, it might not hurt Patinkin to shoot his one last scene alone as much as it’ll hurt the show itself.

Patinkin is not Gideon, and moreover Gideon is not Patinkin. Gideon seemed like a pretty good guy who would not just clean his desk, grab his stuff and leave without a word. Maybe the actor did, doesn’t mean the character should pull something similar - it would only hurt the show, and get fans pissed off towards the show as much as the crew is towards Patinkin right now.

I understand they’re mad, but they really shouldn’t take it out on the show and its fans. Hopefully the writers will be able to write something that doesn’t need more than Patinkin to be alone in one scene, without affecting the show. Even letting their anger out, and having him killed by some serial killer!

It’s Gideon that people would cry, not Patinkin. We know that, please don’t forget it!

This is SUCH a stupid article. Sorry. But Gideon sucked, and the show won’t suffer cause of his stupidity.

Well, that’s your opinion at least. You say he “sucked” and the show is better off without him, while others think he was the best and the show will not survive his departure…

I think both statement are unfair. Gideon was a solid and central character, but the show is stronger than that.

And either way, not the point here really : what I meant was, they blame Patinkin for his behavior, and express their “disappointment” by pulling a pretty unprofessional move theirselves, which could end up hurting the show. Hopefully it won’t…

Wow, I know this is your own blog and you are allowed to have an opinion, but if you are going to post a link for everyone to read on the tvguide website you should really use spell check or have someone proof read your work. You misspell Patinkin’s name, use double negatives and have terrible grammar. How are we supposed to take you seriously?

I just wanted to show you a few examples for when you get angry at me. I’m not trying to be mean, but I do feel that if you are going to have an entire website devoted to editorials you should really be careful. People are not going to take you seriously or return to your site if they can’t follow what you are saying. You do have some good points, but it’s frustrating to read so people tune out and don’t come back. Just my thoughts. Hope the constructive criticism will be beneficial.

part of the show no more (ANY more)
But not that it’s been done (NOW that it’s..)
one single scene only during which he will pretty much be all alone (bad grammar at the end of a terrible run on sentence)
    He didn’t warned anyone (warn)
remember that no less that the seven (than the seven)
Painkin’s move, but it’s no moving to another level. (Patinkin’s move, NOW moving)
or will be able not to let this affect their work too much (be able TO NOT)
might not hurt Patinkin to shot (shoot)
shouldn’t take it on the show (take it OUT on the show…)
Maybe his interpret did, doesn’t mean he (do you mean counterpart? And you’re missing words after the comma)
It’s Gideon people would cry (Because it’s Gideon, comma)

I have to admit that, while I found this interesting, the problems that Me Again refers to made me wince; and yes, it did make me wonder about credibility. Still, it looks like Fred went back and corrected some of the problems, so kudos to him.

I think that part of the nature of blogging is that bloggers want/have to get their thoughts out very quickly. In any case, I don’t hold them to the same grammar etc. standards that I do for, say, authors of healthcare journal articles (I’m a professional editor). Just my 2 cents!

it won’t be the same without Gideon, I’ll try to continueto watch it, but I don’t think it will be as good. Maybe they’ll run CSI New York in it’s place when it goes off the air.

I do not agree with you about Gideon sucking. I think Gideon was a great character and a great actor. It will not be the same without him.
I won’t judge the show about what I hear about him and his departure as long as the show sets it up within the show properly.
It’s a great show, but Gideon was a good part of it. Hopefully it will remain a great show.

I believe Criminal Minds will survive with or without the very talented Mandy Patinkin. I love the show, and all the very talented people the writers chose to portray the actors. The writers did an excellant job choosing the right people for their roles.
Maybe all the crime and pain portrayed in each episode has caused Mandy Patinkin, a very sensitive man, to want out. I suspect the crimes enacted may effect anyone eventually, to actually play a character so close to violent crimes.
I don’t know the facts of how things came about for Patinkin to leave, but Mandy Patinkin is a very talented, very sensitive man. I can see it on his face. He feels his role as Gideon and the crime that surrounds him. But he is a very good actor. Some people can probably say this is just a role I play, but a sensitive man like Patinkin probably experiences the pain more than some, and it effects him on a different level.
I wish Mandy well, in whatever he chooses to do from this day forward…. he is a very special person. I also wish all the cast of Criminal Minds continued success.

I haven’t been able to watch Criminal Minds for a few weeks and was shocked to see Joe Mantegna in place of Mandy Patinkin. I think the other characters will have a chance to shine now. I think I know why they got Joe to replace Mandy — it’s all in the voice. Close your eyes and listen — see if you don’t hear the similarity. I’ll keep watching with or without Mandy.
