Devil’s soul in Reaper

By fred | July 23, 2007

Reaper(PreAir) Reaper is a one of the new show from The CW, of which I got a chance to see a screener of its pilot. So I watched it, and here’s the result.

Honestly, having read the official description of the show I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but I definitely expected something different than what the show turned out to be. Don’t get this the wrong way, though, I liked the show!

Reaper is about Sam, who just turned 21. Nothing really special, only his parents forgot to mention one little detail : they made a “pact” years ago, they sold his soul to the devil before he was born, and agreed that He would come and collect his due on the child’s 21st birthday.

Now after reading this, I expected some big, major changes in Sam’s behavior after he turned 21. But there were none, really. I was expecting him to somehow, well, loose his soul (to the Devil) and therefore stop caring for people, turn mean, that kind of stuff.

Instead, he (almost) didn’t changed at all. Instead, the Devil simply stopped by to inform him that he now must work for him, collect souls of bad guys who escaped from Hell and send them back there. And why will he do it? Because if he doesn’t, the Devil will go after his mother.

- Oh yeah? Well screw her, go take her soul or whatever, I don’t care!, is what I was expecting him to say. Because, well, if he had no more soul he wouldn’t care no more. And because after all, she sold his soul to the devil so why wouldn’t he got back at her in doing her the exact same thing.
After all, it doesn’t seem to change you a bit.

So not what I expected, and more important not not the point, here. That was just a stupid plot to get the show started. So let’s get started!

Reaper isn’t just a comedy, though, but (yet another) mix of comedy, action, and fight against Evil monsters. Doesn’t that sound familiar? Sam is a somewhat “chosen one”, who has superpowers (yes, another one!) and must go track down and send monsters back to Hell.
And to accomplish his “fate”, he can count on a few buddies of his. They’re not evil fighters, don’t have any powers, they’re just friends willing to help.
